Manchester United plan one last push for Wesley Sneijder

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has raised the prospect of a renewed attempt to sign Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder by admitting Sir Alex Ferguson aims to sign a ‘world-class’ player before next month’s transfer deadline.

United manager Ferguson, whose team face the MLS All-Stars in New Jersey on Wednesday, has already spent £48.3 million on Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea this summer.

But attempts to sign a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes have foundered, with Manchester City leading the race for Arsenal’s Samir Nasri and Sneijder’s wages and transfer fee proving prohibitive.

The Dutch midfielder is understood to be keen to move to United, however, and talks between associated parties took place earlier this month. Gill has now admitted United remain determined to make a stellar addition to their squad before Aug 31.

“We’ve got a great squad and to get into that squad you need to be a world-class player,” Gill said.

“There’s no point, if you can’t get the players you want, in buying someone for the sake of buying someone. But we are looking at one more player to bring in.

Nothing’s happening — nothing imminent — on that at the moment, but we’ll see what happens when we get home [from the United States]. There’ll still be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops.”

With Sneijder earning a basic £190,000 a week at Inter, the Italian club’s £35 million valuation is viewed as excessive by United, particularly with the 27 year-old former Ajax and Real Madrid player having little resale value due to his age.

Ferguson has talked of the difficulties in securing a replacement for Scholes, but the Scot is aware that it is an area United must address if they are to close the gap on European champions Barcelona.

Gill insists, though, that United are prepared to be patient as they seek the final addition to their squad.

He said: “The important point to understand, and Alex has made it clear, is that we need someone who’s going to improve the quality of the squad.”
