Bendtner set for Sporting switch with Gunners striker heading for £9m exit

Nicklas Bendtner is heading for the Emirates exit door with the Arsenal striker set to join Sporting Lisbon in a £9million deal.

According to reports in Portugal, the 23-year-old will be unveiled this Saturday at the Estadio Jose Alvalade before Sporting's friendly with Spanish side Valencia.

The Denmark international was put up for sale at the start of the summer by manager Arsene Wenger and attracted interest from Barclays Premier League side Everton.

Wenger, who faces a battle to keep the services of Barcelona-bound captain Cesc Fabregas and contract rebel midfielder Samir Nasri, conceded he would not stand in Bendtner's way of a departure.

He said last week: 'How many will leave the club? I said from the start I will fight to keep everybody. Nicklas Bendtner might go and Emmanuel Eboue might go. They can talk to clubs, but the rest I will fight.'

Bendtner's imminent exit is enhanced by the arrival of recent summer recruit Gervinho, which has pushed him further well down the order of the Gunners pool of strikers.

Despite making over 150 appearances for the north London club since he arrived in 2004, Bendtner struggled to hold down a regular first-team place and failed to win over Gunners supporters.
