Liverpool FC Transfers: The 10 Best Signings Kenny Dalglish Has Made

After Liverpool FC's horror show at Tottenham Hotspur, fans of the Anfield club might need some cheering up.

Tonight's Carling Cup tie at Brighton could prove difficult because the South Coast club are sitting pretty near the top of the Championship. Therefore, in the spirit of optimism and positivity, Lawrence McNeela outlines the top 10 signings Kenny Dalglish has made during his two stints as Liverpool manager.

From John Barnes to Luis Suarez, here are the best transfers the man the Kop calls King Kenny has made thus far.

John Barnes' talents are best summed up by former teammate Peter Beardsley, who says, "For three or four years at the end of the 80's, John was possibly the best player in the world."

He signed for Liverpool in June 1987 for £900,000, a large sum at that time.

A left winger of incredible skill and balance, he repaid the fee many times over, scoring 84 goals in 314 appearances.

A British record signing at the time, Peter Beardsley arrived at Anfield in a £1.9 million deal. Like teammate John Barnes, he was one that got away as far as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was concerned.

Peter Beardsley had natural talent in abundance. He could dance through tackles as though they had never been made and was the scorer of many great goals. He also provided many assists for John Aldridge and Ian Rush, both of whom were prolific goal scorers.

He scored 46 goals in 131 appearances for the Reds. His transfer to city rivals Everton was a rare mistake by Liverpool as he contributed another 25 goals in 81 appearances for the Toffees.

Ray Houghton was the Scotland-born Republic of Ireland international who played all his club football in England. Signed for £825,000, he was seen by Kenny Dalglish as the final piece in the great team he was assembling.

That team, which won the English title in 1987-88, was one of the very best that English football will ever see.

A lookalike for Liverpool legend Ian Rush, John Aldridge replaced the Welsh striker after his move to Juventus.

John Aldridge signed for £750,000 and scored 63 goals in 104 appearances for his boyhood favourites.

He was also a success in Spanish football, scoring 33 goals for Real Sociedad. He then returned to Merseyside to become a Tranmere Rovers legend. He scored 138 times for the Birkenhead club, before going on to manage them.

A gem of a find, Jamie Redknapp was signed as a youngster having played just 13 times for first club AFC Bournemouth.

He quickly proved himself to be a midfielder of rare passing ability and creative vision. Unfortunately, his career was jinxed by injury and he was never able to reach his undoubted potential.

He became part of the infamous Spice Boys of the Roy Evans era when he dated gorgeous pop star Louise Nurding. It was probably an unfair tag and he went on to captain the team under Gerard Houllier.

Kenny Dalglish's first signing as Liverpool manager was probably also his most combative. A central midfielder of power and determination, Steve McMahon is one of the few players to have played for both Everton and Liverpool during the modern era.

Who can forget his powerhouse displays during the 1987-88 season, especially the commitment he showed in the victories over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest?

His "singing" in the notorious Anfield Rap was worth the £350,000 fee paid for him alone.

Arguably Liverpool's greatest signing since their glory days in the 1980s, Luis Suarez is a player of unique talents. Quick and skillful and with an eye for the outrageous, the Uruguayan gives opposing defenders nightmares.

If he can add a more ruthless edge to his goal scoring, Luis Suarez can become an all-time great.

Despite proving to be one of the English Premier League's best players during his time with Blackpool, Charlie Adam arrived for a bargain £7 million this summer.

Neat and tidy in possession, Charlie Adam has the ability to unlock defences with his long-range passing ability. He is also a fantastic striker of a dead ball and will make and score many goals for Liverpool during the next few years.

It took Jose Enrique a long time to settle at former club Newcastle United but by the time he signed for Liverpool he was recognised as one of the English Premier League's best full-backs.

Newcastle United wanted £15 million for him, but Kenny Dalglish snapped Jose Enrique up for a third of that cost. His early season displays have been fantastic and Liverpool look to have finally solved their left-back problem.

Silver-haired Swede Glenn Hysen was never the greatest player at Liverpool, but he gets a special mention here.
