Manchester United vs. Basel: 5 Great Sir Alex Ferguson Late Shows

0 of 5

Alex Ferguson's Manchester United teams have made something of a habit of scoring deep in injury time, in what has become termed as "Fergie time."

His latest side was at it again on Tuesday; this time newcomer Ashley Young honouring the United tradition by popping up in the 90th minute to salvage a draw against FC Basel in the Champions League.

Young's effort was admirable, but given it was in just the second game of the group stage, and against FC Basel, it doesn't rank up there with the most stunning late shows the United faithful have enjoyed over the years.

Here we take a look at five of the best.

Manchester United 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday, Premier League, Old Trafford, 1993

1 of 5

Closing in on their first league title in 26 years, United looked to be bottling it at the death as they entered stoppage time a goal down to Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford.

Cue Steve Bruce with a brace of headers that sparked off delirious celebration as Fergie embarrassed himself with a joyful jig that paled only in comparison to Brian Kidd's outrageous kneeslide.

Manchester United 1-1 Oldham Athletic, FA Cup Semifinal, Wembley, 1994

2 of 5

Mark Hughes made a name for himself during his playing career with his spectacular volleys, but none were more important than his stunning effort in injury time against Oldham at Wembley.

The Welshman's outstretched boot connected sweetly to power the ball into the back of the net in injury time to level the match and set up a replay at Maine Road, which United won 4-1.

They went on to claim the club's first Double that season.

Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich, Champions League Final, Camp Nou, 1999

3 of 5

The most dramatic of endings to the biggest game in European club football, United's incredible late comeback at the Camp Nou simply beggared belief.

Heading into injury time, Ferguson's Treble-chasers trailed 1-0 to the Bundesliga giants heading into injury time. Teddy Sheringham turned in a Ryan Giggs shot, leaving United fans celebrating having forced extra time.

But there was no need for an additional period as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured his place in the club's folklore with a stabbed, close-range winner. Sheer ecstasy followed for those lucky enough to be in the stadium.

Manchester United 3-2 Aston Villa, Premier League, Old Trafford, 2009

4 of 5

Old Trafford is dubbed the "Theatre of Dreams," and this encounter went some way to explaining why.

Having slipped to 2-1 down against Villa, the idea of United somehow winning the game with just 10 minutes remaining was the stuff of pure fantasy. But Cristiano Ronaldo leveled before substitute Federico Macheda made a name for himself with a stunning winner in the third minute of injury time.

Victory put United back on track and they went on to claim an 18th league title.

Manchester City V Manchester United, Community Shield, Wembley, 2011

5 of 5

United's thrilling, Michael Owen-inspired win over local rivals Manchester City back in 2009 nearly made the top five, but this one pipped it by virtue of some silverware being won on the actual day.

City, fresh from another summer of huge spending, raced to a two-goal lead by halftime. But United's revival began after the break with Chris Smalling and Nani pulling the score back level, and seemingly sending the match into extra time.

Nani, though, had other ideas and the Portuguese winger struck his second of the day in the fourth minute that handed United their first trophy of the season—and bragging rights until the two clubs next meet.
