Liverpool FC's Top 5 Left Footers Since the Reds' Last Championship

Top quality left footed players are worth their weight in gold to many teams and Liverpool FC are no different.

In the squads over the past years, the left side of midfield and left footers in general have been a problem area for the Reds. Many have been brought into the club and subsequently, failing to match requirements and expectations, have moved on.

The current squad, compiled by Kenny Dalglish, is awash with left footed talent and it appears that the Scot has been able to solve the problematic left midfield position too.

Liverpool's last outing, a disappointing home draw to newly promoted Swansea, saw no less half of the outfield players being left footed; Daniel Agger, Jose Enrique, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Andy Carroll all started for the Reds.

How much of an impact on the history of Liverpool FC Dalglish's current crop of left footers will have, only time will tell. But who have been the standout "lefties" since Liverpool's last League Championship winning squad, coincidentally managed by Kenny Dalglish himself?

These are the Top five left footed players to have played for Liverpool FC since the Reds' last League Championship title in the 1989-90 season.

Luis Garcia arrived at Liverpool and brought the place to light.

In 2004, Rafa Benitez, continued his "Spainish Revolution" at Liverpool with the acquisition of the little Garcia from Atletico Madrid for £6m.

In his first season, it was his performances in Liverpool's march to the Champions League Final in Istanbul, that were the highlights.

In that fantastic run that ultimately ended with Liverpool lifting the Cup, Garcia scored five times. The two most memorable were the wondrous strike against Juventus in the quarterfinals and the famous "ghost-goal" in the semifinal against Chelsea.

His role in Liverpool's fifth European Cup triumph will forever place Garcia in the hearts of the Anfield faithful.

Garcia played with a swagger, creativity and unexpectedness and was, and is, missed by many Liverpool fans.

In his Liverpool career, Garcia made 121 appearances and scored 30 goals. But it was his breath of fresh air that lives long in the Liverpool fans' hearts.

Patrik Berger arrived on Merseyside following an impressive Euro 96 tournament in England where he was inspirational to the Czech Republic's runner's up placing, behind only Germany.

Signed by Roy Evans, it was arguably under Gerard Houllier that Berger made his biggest impact as a Liverpool player.

Blessed with a thunderous shot from his trusted left foot, Berger scored some spectacular goals in his Liverpool career and for a while, the left midfield slot was not a problem position for the Reds.

Being part of the team of Liverpool's amazing treble winning season of 2000-01 will secure Berger's part in the history of the club and in the hearts of the fans.

Injury, sadly, saw the Czech international feature less in the Reds' first team than would have been expected and led to his moving on in 2003.

However, he was not forgotten and memories of the power of his left footed blasts lives long in the memory.

John Arne Riise spent seven years at Liverpool's FC, making 348 appearances and scoring 31 goals. His goal tally is all the more impressive, given the fact that he played most of those games at left back.

Riise is firmly embedded in the history of Liverpool and his contribution to their comeback in the Champions League final against AC Milan in May 2005, plays a large part in that embedding.

It was his cross, from the left, that was headed in by Steven Gerrard that began the comeback of comebacks. And despite striking a super penalty which the giant Dida saved, Riise's part in that final was immense.

Many of his goals were memorable strikes from a left foot that probably struck a ball more cleanly and with more power than any other player to have pulled on a Liverpool jersey.

A sublime strike against Manchester United also has pride of place within his goal tally for the Reds, as does the run from his own area and strike in the Community Shield encounter against Chelsea in 2006.

Riise can proudly take his place as the third best left footed player to have played for Liverpool since their last League title in 1990.

Placing Robbie Fowler, second and not first, was a tough call. The Liverpool born and bred striker is referred to as "God" by fans that adored him.

Fowler came through the ranks at Anfield and signed his first professional contract in 1992 and made his debut in 1993.

On this debut, which was in the League Cup away to Fulham, Fowler scored and amazingly scored all five of Liverpool's goals in the home leg later.

Fowler was the most instinctive goal poacher and natural finisher the Reds had seen since Ian Rush.

Young player awards were bestowed on the youngster, as he simply kept scoring goals. He scored the Premier League's fastest hat-trick against Arsenal in four minutes and 33 seconds!

In total, Fowler made 369 appearances for the Reds and scored a remarkable 183 goals.

There are too many superlatives to describe this talented Liverpool legend. A real fans favorite and player that has his place in the history of Liverpool firmly secured.

Liverpool Football Club Hall of Famer John Barnes is at top of the list of the best left footed players to have played for the Reds.

In 1987, Kenny Dalglish paid Watford £900,000 for the services of winger Barnes. Much was made of this transfer and Barnes was under the spotlight.

But from this beginning, the Liverpool winger, went on to become one of the greatest players to play for the Reds, and also one of the best loved.

His style and grace, on the left wing, were a joy to watch, and his effortless beating of defenders was sublime.

Blessed with great technical ability, Barnes scored so many memorable Liverpool goals, it would be too difficult to point to any one that was more brilliant than the other.

Player of the Year Awards came his way, as did titles and cups. In his glittering Liverpool career, Barnes made 407 appearances and scored 108 goals.

As a testimony to his longevity, once he realised his pace was going, Barnes transformed himself into a fantastic defensive midfielder and continued to serve the Reds for more seasons.
