Manchester United News: Red Devils Will Be Winter Buyers as Vidic's Season Lost

If any of you Manchester United supporters have games from the start of the season recorded, now would be the time to reminisce. 

Sir Alex Ferguson simply has to get out the pocketbook and begin writing checks. The good news is that the January transfer window is around the corner. The awful news is that the Red Devils are going to need it. 

The Daily Mail reports Fergie's worst fears have come to fruition as skipper Nemanja Vidic will miss the rest of the season. 

The knee injury came in Wednesday's humble bow out of the Champions League against FC Basel. The hope was that Vidic would be out for only a few games, but Fergie insists it is much worse. 

I thought it was a bad one when I saw it. He sees the specialist on Monday to map out the progress of when he has the operation. It won't be immediate because we have to let the swelling come down. It is a bit of a blow.

This has been a bad week to be a supporter of Manchester United. They already had a questionable back line and now lose their famed centre-back. 

Fergie now has Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans ready to go, but that only raises one huge question. How much can they get out of the aged and recently injured Rio Ferdinand?

Add to that the recent injury to winger Ashley Young and you can see that there is quite an issue of depth at Old Trafford. 

If you are looking for good news, it would have to be that January comes in time to solve much of this before United loses any more ground to rivals Manchester City. 

By flaming out of the Champions League, the domestic trophies have now become that much more important, especially after the start this team had. At the outset, United looked unstoppable. To be without the EPL title now would be a failure. 

The report states that the possibility of buying more talent in the January transfer window has been bandied about. Consider that United will be without nine first-team players for Saturday's match and you begin to see where this is headed.

With domestic integrity on the line, I have no doubt that Ferguson will be in the market with both hands in just a few short weeks.
