Former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has highlighted dozens of racist tweets on microblogging site Twitter and called on the company to take action.

Collymore marked a number of racist tweets using the "favourites" function on Twitter and alerted his followers to look at what he had found, suggesting that the problem of racism was a growing unspoken cancer within football and society.

Collymore suggested that Twitter should step in to deal with the torrent of racist language, saying "tell me there isn't at least something to address".

Now a radio and television presenter, Collymore has attracted a number of distasteful comments after drawing attention to the tweets, and re-published some on his own page.

Nevertheless Collymore was moved to comment that the positive messages he has received outnumber the negative considerably.

Collymore's comments come after a backlash to Liverpool's players wearing supportive t-shirts for their striker Luis Suarez before their game against Wigan on Wednesday.

Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra earlier this week.

Kenny Dalglish has defended his side's right to show their support for Suarez, saying: "The statement couldn't have caused anyone any trouble and I don't think the players have caused any trouble with the FA either by their statement or support by their T-shirts."
