Terry takes a back seat as Ferdinand is booed by Stamford Bridge crowd

John Terry watched from the stands at Stamford Bridge as Rio Ferdinand was subjected to boos from fans during Chelsea's dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester United.

Terry sat out the match - which came just days after he was stripped of the England captaincy by the FA - due to a knee injury.

Even though he was not playing, Terry cast a long shadow over proceedings, with the visiting supporters taunting him over his highly-publicised problems.

Chelsea fans predictably showed their backing with chants of 'There's only one England captain', while jeering Ferdinand's every touch.

The Chelsea captain is facing trial on July 9 for allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, the brother of United defender, Rio.

FA chairman David Bernstein had phoned Terry on Friday morning to inform him of the board's decision, which came 48 hours after it was confirmed Terry's trial would be held on July 9, after Euro 2012. Terry denies the charge.

The match itself ended in a thrilling draw after the reigning Premier League champions mounted a stunning comeback from three goals behind to secure a morale-boosting point.

A Jonny Evans own goal plus strikes from Juan Mata and David Luiz had given the Blues a 3-0 lead, but two penalties from Wayne Rooney and a late header by Javier Hernandez completed United's fightback.

England are due to play Holland at the end of this month, where Steven Gerrard is expected to be named as Terry's replacement as captain.
