Ajax coach Frank de Boer worked with Luis Suarez during his time in Holland and admits the Uruguayan is capable of 'stupid things'.
The Liverpool striker has dominated Premier League newsreels ever since he was accused of racist abuse by Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in October 2011.
He was subsequently charged and handed an eight-match ban, during which time both his actions and those of his employers continued to generate headlines.
Upon returning from suspension, Suarez made his first start in a meeting with United, and caused uproar as he refused to shake Evra's hand.
Several apologies have been issued by Liverpool and members of their staff in the wake of that incident, with it hoped that the matter can now be laid to rest.
It is, however, not the first time that Suarez's ill-discipline has caused controversy, with the South American having been banned by the Dutch FA for seven matches in November 2010 for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal.
De Boer was assistant to Ajax boss Martin Jol at that time and admits the club's former striker is prone to moments of madness.
"Luis is a winner," he said.
"Outside the pitch he's a fantastic player and person.
"In the game he does everything to win but sometimes he does some stupid things.
"I don't really know the details of what happened in that (Saturday's) game so I can't comment.
"But I don't think it was very smart that he didn't shake Evra's hand because it puts more attention on everything."
