Gunners boss eager to pip Spurs in the table

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants his side to finish in third spot in the Premier League this season as a worst-case scenario. The Gunners will miss out on silverware yet again this term following their UEFA Champions League exit to AC Milan in midweek. The North Londoners are well adrift in the title race, leaving the club's focus on finishing as high up the table as possible. With rivals Tottenham losing to Everton at Goodison Park, Arsenal can close to within a point of third with success over Newcastle. It has been an up and down season for the Emirates Stadium club and Wenger believes qualifying for Europe would be an achievement.

Fight

"I am scared to answer questions about what we have and what we can achieve - but finishing with a place in Europe this season, after what we have been through, would be right up there," commented Wenger. "I am ready to fight and fight we will. It has not been easy for us but I always believed. The team believed. "We knew there was something here and I am proud we have managed to show we are still a force. We want Champions League football next season. At the worst I want third place. At the moment third place is still in Tottenham's hands but it is down to consistency. We have difficult games, they have difficult games. "We have to make sure the fourth place is attainable first. Then maybe higher, a lot higher. Who knows? "There are eleven games left to play and so much can happen during that time. Manchester United and Manchester City have tough games. I know we are ready. We need to keep up our momentum. "Ask others if they would like to see Arsenal in their rear view mirror and I suspect the answer would be 'No', although to be honest I'd rather have the points at this stage."
