Tottenham Pressure: Defender's Comments Spell Trouble for Spurs

In the aftermath of Tottenham's 1-0 loss to Everton, a result that has seen Spurs' grasp on third and fourth places in the Premier League wither to a mere one and four points, respectively, there has been lots of talk about the importance to the club of the final ten matches in the Prem.

After all, losing out on Champions League football, especially after having built such a cushion between them and their rivals, could be deadly for the squad.

With their form in the metaphorical toilet and Arsenal and (to a lesser extent) Chelsea seemingly finding their strides, it is sure to be a nail-biting run-in for Spurs supporters.

What's worse, though, is that there have been indications that those feelings of anxiety may also be within the club.

Just look at the comments of left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who said today that Spurs "now face 10 cup finals" in reference to the ten matches left in the Premier League season.

Now, these comments may seem good on the surface, indicating that the Tottenham players are not hiding from the enormity of the situation in which they find themselves.

However, the wording Assou-Ekotto used is alarming.

Like in any other competitive activity, Spurs must take these matches one at a time and concentrate just on winning the next match.  Basically, they have to look at their situation on the micro level.

To acknowledge that there are 10 of these types of matches upcoming is an indication that the players are looking at the picture on the macro level, which could easily be overwhelming and lead to a fold.

Granted, this is one player coming out with these comments; however, with such a man-manager as Redknapp behind the helm of the club, it is surprising that any player would come out with such a comment.

The manager needs to sit down his players and make it clear what they should be concentrating on and how they should be viewing their final matches.

Get it together, 'Arry, because if all of Tottenham are viewing the run-in the same way as Assou-Ekotto, this season may just go down as the epic collapse that we are all dreading.
