Liverpool to face Roma as part of summer tour of North America

Liverpool will break new ground this summer when they play a glamour pre-season friendly against Italian giants AS Roma at the iconic baseball stadium Fenway Park.

The ground is home to the Boston Red Sox, who are owned, like Liverpool, by Fenway Sports Group and the game against Roma on July 25 is being staged to celebrate the venue’s centenary.

This will be the first time Liverpool have travelled to North America for a tour since 2004 and it was inevitable that they would be based in Boston.

Liverpool’s principle owner John W Henry said: ‘This is an appropriate way to help celebrate Fenway’s 100th anniversary and showcase our ballpark to an international audience.’

Roma are also owned by an American consortium and its leader, Thomas DiBenedetto is an investor in FSG. Liverpool will be away for 12 days and use Harvard University as their base.

Should Liverpool fail to win the FA Cup, the friendly against Roma will take place a week before they play the first competitive fixture of the 2012/13 season in the Europa League.

Manager Kenny Dalglish, meanwhile, is clinging to the hope that Charlie Adam will recover from damaged knee ligaments to play again this season.

Dalglish said: ‘He hasn’t has an operation and, as it stands, he won’t be having one.’
