European Power Rankings: Ranking the Top 25 Clubs in Europe

The rankings this week are a logjam.

Around the top 10 of the B/R European power rankings, a bundle of English clubs are all jumbled up. For the last few weeks, the usual suspects—Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal—have been mixing it up, and now, the slumping Manchester City are joining in on the fun.

Elsewhere, the Spanish duopoly continue to rule, and there's a flip-flop in German powerhouses in the top five.

Results: Won 1-0 at Panaitolikos (league)

Fixtures: Next: At OFI, Wednesday (cup); home to Kerkyra, Sunday (league)

Olympiakos are closing on another Greek title after beating Panaitolikos.

Results: Won 2-1 home to Academica (league); lost 2-1 at Benfica (league)

Fixtures: Home to Porto, Saturday (league)

Braga won their 13th straight game this week, then lost a tight one at Benfica to a stoppage-time goal. Nonetheless, they're still only two points behind Porto for the league lead, and they're facing Porto on Saturday at home, where they’re unbeaten this season (11 wins, one draw).

Lille are third in the French league and in line for Champions League qualification. After PSG's loss this weekend, the gap between the teams is only four points.

Results: Lost 3-1 at Parma (league)

Fixtures: Home to Napoli, Saturday (league)

Lazio lost again, and that makes three out of four. Somehow, though, they're still third in Serie A. Lazio host Napoli on Saturday in a game that could decide third place in Serie A—and a CL spot.

Results: Won 3-2 at FC Thun (league)

Fixtures: At Lausanne, Wednesday (league); at Lucerne, Saturday (league)

Basel keep chugging along domestically.

Results: Lost 2-1 at Hannover 96 (league)

Fixtures: At Werder Bremen, April 10 (league)

The slide continues. Gladbach remain fourth, but they're now three points behind Schalke.

Results: Won 2-1 home to Valencia (Europa League quarters, first leg); drew 2-2 at Vitesse Arnhem (league)

Fixtures: At Valencia, Thursday (Europa quarters second leg, lead 2-1); home to Twente, April 11

AZ Alkmaar fell to second in the Eredivisie behind in-form Ajax, but they beat Valencia in the Europa League. So it was still a pretty good week.

Results: Lost 4-2 home to Athletic Bilbao (Europa League quarterfinal, first leg); drew 1-1 at Hoffenheim (league)

Fixtures: At Athletic Bilbao, Thursday (Europa League quarterfinal, second leg); home to Hannover 96, Sunday (league)

Schalke became Athletic Bilbao's latest European victim and then drew at Hoffenheim in league play. They remain third in the Bundesliga.

Results: Won 2-1 at Spartak Moscow (league)

Fixtures: At Lokomotiv Moscow, Saturday (league)

Zenit are still on course for another Russian title. And I still haven't forgiven them for that ugly showing against Benfica in the Champions League.

Results: Won 6-0 home to SC Heracles Almelo (league)

Fixtures: At Heerenveen, April 10 (league)

After the thumping victory over Heracles Almelo, Ajax have won eight straight in the Dutch League by a combined score of 27-5. The last four wins have all been shutouts.

Ajax are closing on a title repeat, which would be the club's first since winning three in a row from 1994-96.

Results: Lost 2-1 at AS Nancy Lorraine (league)

Fixtures: Home to Marseille, Sunday (league)

PSG are still struggling. When will the big-money superstars snap out of it?

Results: No new results

Fixtures: Home to Sochaux, April 7 (league)

Montpellier didn't play, but stayed atop the French league thanks to PSG's loss.

Results: Lost 1-0 home to Chelsea (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); won 2-1 home to Braga (league)

Fixtures: At Chelsea, Wednesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); at Sporting Lisbon, April 9 (next Monday)

Benfica remain one point behind Porto in the league, and they're one goal behind Chelsea in the Champions League.

Results: Won 2-0 home to Olhanense (league)

Fixtures: At Braga, Saturday (league)

Porto's lead over Benfica in the Portuguese league is one point, and Braga are two points behind. Hey, it's just like last week.

Results: Won 1-0 at Benfica (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); won 4-2 at Aston Villa (league)

Fixtures: Home to Benfica, Wednesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); home to Wigan, Saturday (league)

The revival is back on, but Chelsea are still five points behind Arsenal and Spurs for third and fourth place.

Results: Won 3-1 home to Bolton (FA Cup quarterfinal); won 3-1 home to Swansea (league)

Fixtures: At Sunderland, Saturday (league)

Spurs took advantage of some home fixtures to end their winless run. Now, they're level on points with Arsenal and into the semifinals of the FA Cup.

Results: Lost 2-1 at QPR (league)

Fixtures: Home to Manchester City, Sunday (league)

Arsenal's seven-game winning run ended at QPR. Anybody can have a bad day, but how will the Gunners respond? Manchester City visit the Emirates on Sunday.

Results: Drew 3-3 home to Sunderland (league)

Fixtures: At Arsenal, Sunday (league)

That was a nice comeback, but it could seriously damage City’s title chances if United beat Blackburn on Monday. Arsenal are next in what’s a must-win for both teams.

Results: Won 3-0 home to Napoli (league)

Fixtures: At Palermo, Saturday (league)

Juventus' win over Napoli cut Milan's lead atop Serie A to two points.

Results: Won 1-0 home to Fulham (league)

Fixtures: At Blackburn, Monday (league); home to QPR, Sunday (league)

United just keep winning as everybody else in England stumbles. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Results: Drew 4-4 home to VfB Stuttgart (league)

Fixtures: At VfL Wolfsburg, Saturday (league)

Dortmund are unbeaten in their last 22 games, but their lead is down to three points over hard-charging Bayern. For now, I'm giving the slight edge to Bayern. The two teams will meet in the DFB-Pokal final on May 12.

Results: Won 2-0 at Marseille (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); won 1-0 at Nurnberg (league)

Fixtures: Home to Marseille, Tuesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); home to Augsburg, Saturday (league)

That's four straight league wins. Bayern are now three points behind Dortmund, and they have one foot in the Champions League semis.

Results: Drew 0-0 home to Barcelona (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); drew 1-1 at Catania (league)

Fixtures: At Barcelona, Tuesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); home to Fiorentina, Saturday (league)

Milan held Barca, then Catania held Milan—though Milan had what looked like a good goal ruled out.

Results: Won 3-0 at APOEL Nicosia (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); won 5-1 at Osasuna (league)

Fixtures: Home to APOEL Nicosia, Wednesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); home to Valencia, Sunday (league)

Real's lead atop La Liga is still six points. They're all but assured of a place in the Champions League semifinals.

Results: Drew 0-0 at AC Milan (Champions League quarterfinal, first leg); won 2-0 at Athletic Bilbao (league)

Fixtures: Home to AC Milan, Tuesday (Champions League quarterfinal, second leg); at Real Zaragoza, Saturday (league)

I'm still not ready to put Real ahead of Barca until somebody beats Barca in Europe.
