Liverpool FC: Is Bas Dost the Striker to Answer the Reds' Woes?

Liverpool's travails in front of goal have been talked about all season long. The summer transfer market will be filled with all kinds of ammunition that could resurrect Liverpool as a force in the league. With Damien Comolli and Liverpool parting ways on mutual consent, the onus will be on Kenny Dalglish to find the right players. 

Kenny will be wary of the wastage committed last summer and will avoid pricey transfers as much as he can. It was wastage because even if the players do start performing, in hindsight, Liverpool Football Club could have bargained to save at least £10 million—if not more.

There is a certain player in the Eredivisie by the name of Bas Dost who has a good chance of striking a lottery with Liverpool. With the number of chances that Liverpool are consistently creating, Dost is one of the players the management at Liverpool should be looking at. 

At a ripe age of 22, he fits in with the transfer strategy of John Henry and Fenway Sports Group of buying young with an eye on future resale value. Last summer's transfers hardly suggest that a resale value will even achieve break-even numbers, let alone profits. Bas Dost, however, will cost only £5-7 million and has a better chance of yielding profit at a later stage. 

Dost has scored 25 goals in 21 starts for Heerenveen this season, though what is more important for Liverpool is his style. He is a goal poacher and even has heading capacity to go with his aerial threat at a height of 192 centimetres.

Luis Suarez is a different kind of player than Bas Dost and comparisons should not be made there. With Dirk Kuyt there may be a more practical comparison. Although Kuyt is loved by many, most Liverpool fans want the next level in quality.

What separates Bas Dost from Dirk Kuyt is that Kuyt scored his goals for Feyenoord, a team regularly achieving top four. Dost's Heerenveen were 12th last season and have been fighting for the title this season mainly because of his form.

Add to that the superior goals-to-matches ratio for Dost and the memory of how well Kuyt did in his first season. If you are not aware, he had 12 goals and four assists in 27 starts and seven appearances as a substitute in the league.

Bas Dost is not too bad at taking penalties either. With the number of penalties Liverpool have missed this season, someone like Dost would be surely welcome. At the price mentioned, it is worth having a go.
