Should Sony and Microsoft Offer Trade In Promotions For PS4 NEO And Xbox One Scorpio?

Something like this may be necessary to keep customers pacified and bring them on board with the new paradigm.

Why should they? We got what we pay for already. It's not mandatory to upgrade to Neo and Scorpio

gameseveryday2891d ago

It will be mandatory in a way for those who prefer better visuals and performance.

Thatguy-3102891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

Sounds like a personal problem not mandatory. You're still going to be playing the same game you would be playing if there wasn't ps4 neo/xbox Scorpio

2pacalypsenow2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

@Thatguy-310

If these new consoles are true We all know all the publicity will be geared towards the new consoles and its only gonna be a matter of time until they offer exclusive games and downloads only on the new consoles. You think big companies will keep making 2 versions of all their games until the end of the Ps4,Xbox 1 lifespan? Get real.

DivoJones2891d ago

You already used the key words that counter your reply.. prefer doesn't mean mandatory. Air is mandatory, but I prefer bacon-scented air.

donthate2891d ago

It is also mandatory to upgrade to the latest Ferrari if you prefer speed and handling....

Reality is that MS/Sony is under no obligation to do so, but GameStop surely will. The trade-in value though isn't going to be too good all things considered. I'm gonna keep my XB1/PS4 and get a Scorpio if the rumors are real. If not, I upgrade my PC.

TheCommentator2891d ago

2pacalypse, MS doesn't have to make two versions of their games because Win10 and DX12 allow for games to automatically scale to whatever device they'll be played on. One version for Xbox One, Scorpio, and PC.

iTechHeads2891d ago

You're not making sense.

madmonkey012891d ago

sounds like a gaming bolt headline there.

They are in no way mandatory, if they even exist.

2pacalypsenow2891d ago

@TheCommentator yeah because the Xbox one game ports on PC have worked so great...

Muzikguy2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

That doesn't mean mandatory, it means "entitled". If you want the upgrade, pay for it. You prefer something doesn't mean you should get it free or cheaper just because. Nor does it make it mandatory

If that's the kind of thinking you have, no wonder I can't stand Gamingbolt

@iTech and @Divo
Right!

_-EDMIX-_2891d ago

OH so forced upon the individual based on themselves? No.

That isn't how business works. Its not mandatory to play games. PS4 and XONE will still work and play all the same games after their upgrades release. You might mentally make such things mandatory for yourself, but that is ultimately irrelevant to a company.

If anything, Gamestop the retailer would do such a promotion, THEY make money from used hardware. I'm pretty sure MS and Sony don't sell used consoles, I think Nintendo still does off of their site.

TheCommentator2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

2Pacalypse, what you're talking about is games being patched to support DX12. When a developer makes a game FOR Win10/DX12, that game will automatically scale to the device it is being played on, including tablets and phones. 1 code for all platforms Win10 supports. Hence: UWP. \ö/

freshslicepizza2891d ago

publishers will support what is still popular. sony already sold 40 million ps4 units, why would they alineate them for only the neo ps4 users? and the same rumors about neo also stated sony is making it mandatory to make sure the games are backwards compatable and sony does have that power to make sure it happens.

people need to stop fear-mongering and let the consumers decide what they want and what they don't want.

Eonjay2891d ago

Think about this like buying a graphics card. The answer is no. You get what you pay for.

Kingthrash3602891d ago

In rumor the neo is to have no parity or exclusive games.....but scorpio we don't know yet.
Both are rumored items and this question is far too early to ask.
Frigging bad journalism

nowitzki20042891d ago

Thats not mandatory. Mandatory would be, that you need it to be able to play Forza Horizon 3 or something. As long as every game works on the old X1/PS4 they shouldn't do any trade in programs.

"Should Sony and Microsoft Offer Trade In Promotions For PS4 NEO And Xbox One Scorpio?"

No.

That's like saying that Apple or Samsung should do trade in promotions for new smartphones.
... or Nvidia/AMD doing trade in promotions for their new graphics cards.
... or any other new product for that matter.

Companies aren't obliged to offer trade in promotions for their new products. It would be a nice gesture if they did offer the option, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Concertoine2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

I trade in my old phone everytime, what do you do with yours?!

Regardless of whether or not people want them to (why not?), these offers will pop up in places like Gamestop, it happens with every new console. The New 3DS had a trade in deal with the old one.

edit: But who buys a console directly from Sony and MS anyway? I buy from Best Buy - they will inevitably have a trade-in deal.

OC_MurphysLaw2891d ago

@Concertione, actually I don't think the makers of the phones actually offer trade in deals. It's the wireless carriers who are offering it as an incentive to use their service with the phone you are buying. So its not really apples to apples. I think the phone offer is much more similar to the Gamestop offer you mentioned. And I would agree with you, many stores will offer trade in deals to get you to upgrade and buy through them.

lelo2play2891d ago

@Concertoine
"I trade in my old phone everytime, what do you do with yours?! "

Who offers you the trade in? Is it the phones manufacturer or the store that offers the trade in?

You might get trade ins for gaming consoles in the store, I don't think it will be Sony or Microsoft offering them... but I might be mistaken.

hangdang2891d ago

Understandable, but those companies exist in a market where consumers already know a new model will come out next year. This hasn't happened with consoles, and had I known, I probably would have waited instead of purchasing at launch. I can see the argument from both sides, and they both make sense to me.

Tsar4ever012891d ago

"Should Sony and Microsoft Offer Trade In Promotions For PS4 NEO And Xbox One Scorpio?"

The Scorpio is not a Xbox One upgrade it's an all out successor to XB1, ie an XBOX 4. Bill Spenser said he doesn't want an xbox one 1/2, but a flat out next-gen console. Ps4 Neo is not a ps4 successor, just a more powerful Ps4.

Lightning Mr Bubbles2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

This is weird, it's like starting a new gen within the current gen. At first, I though people were making too big a deal about the PS4 Neo, I thought it was just a PS4 with 4K upgrade, not that many people have 4K TV's anyway, so it was just an option for people who did have one. I thought people who were calling it PS4.5 were overdoing it. But now I hear that XBOX One scorpio is said to be 4 times stronger than the XBOX One? What the heck is that? Sounds like it should just be a next gen XBOX instead of a new model XBOX One.

What started all this anyway? They should just wait till next gen before they make more powerful consoles. I guess console gens as we know them are changing right before our eyes.

Concertoine2891d ago

This could very well be the procedure going forward if it succeeds. I hope not though...

OC_MurphysLaw2891d ago

Well first off... lets not get ahead of ourselves. These are all still "rumors" even though there appears to be a ton of smoke around both. What is interesting if the rumors are true is that Sony does appear to be making a smaller "step" in terms of an upgrade here. I don't know yet if that is a good thing or bad. I do agree with you that Scorpio feels like its more a new console vs just an small upgrade and honestly not sure how I feel about that either. I suppose it will all come down to what the costs are associated with these upgrade units.

rainslacker2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

"What started all this anyway?"

Websites not having enough interesting news to drive hits started this....off the catalyst of Phil Spencer asking what people thought about the idea which showed the interest, then I think the rest of the crap was made up except maybe the fabrication rumor from last week, which was more speculation(albeit well researched) to give meaning to the other rumors, and possibly the UHD compatible PS4 rumor, which was more a reddit rumor, but definitely much more logical than a new console paradigm.

@Dlacy

Most of the smoke is just other websites outside the 3 questionable, and 1 somewhat legitimate site. Most of the smoke is just relaying information, or creating opinion articles on it, they aren't even going far enough to say they verified anything outside the 4 involved in actually starting the rumors. The actual fire, is pretty contained within a rather small group of websites and neogaf forum posts. No major, more respectable site has gone on record to say they have verified sources....which seems odd when places like Kotaku and Polygon seem to be able to find a source in a day. Kotaku apparently had two sources from two different authors be able to gather this information on the Scorpio in less than 24 hours. Kind of defies logic that places like IGN can't do the same despite having much better connections in the industry.

WhoCaresWhatMyNameIs2891d ago

@rainslacker

It comes to show this was probably a controlled leak from Microsoft. When you have more than 3 different sources telling you the same thing, that's more than enough to make this a report than a rumor now. That's how journalism works in any industry. Like they said, specs aren't final, but Scorpio is coming in 2017, Xbox One Slim is the end of the year, and two Xbox streaming devices coming soon. That's what I took out of this, everything else is speculation at this point.

supes_242891d ago

I agree with you exactly Lightning Mr Bubbles, and that's why I think it's BS. It feels like something for next gen, not a upgrade that's 4x more powerful than the launch console! That's the type of news you'd expect for the reveal of the PS5 or X2 or something. Not an upgrade for the current gen consoles. If this becomes the norm, why not just become a PC gamer?

Chumdiddy2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

That's the issue going forward: how will this influence console gaming?

The issue is due to AMD changing their manufacturing process that makes the APU systems for both PS4 and XOne obsolete. AMD basically told them that to continue making the current size APU they'd need to foot the manufacturing bill themselves.....and obviously neither wants that. So these upgraded consoles are not decisions from the companies but decisions by the companies in order to save money and this generation of console.

It's too early to jump ahead a gen and they both use AMD so they had to use a new APU build (14nm, iirc) anyway OR spend millions making the original APUs. It only makes sense that if forced mid-gen to use a new APU (CPU+GPU) manufacturing process by the manufacturer you'd respond to the universal call of the consoles being too weak this gen and offer an upgrade model at no loss due to:

time:cpu power:cost

This was clearly forced on them by AMD. The question that worries me is whether they're successful enough that it becomes the norm to release a "new" console that we all know will be the shit-tier "base" model in 2 years. I don't want consoles to take the cell phone route.

I game mainly console for the the specific reason of uniform specs and the idea that $400 will give me a dedicated and supported gaming machine for 5+ years. I WILL NOT buy a new console every 2 years.

Heck, I may get a Neo. Maybe, if a certain game I really want is said to be THAT much better on it than the base PS4 but ONLY this gen. I'll go PC before doing that.

Where there is more power there will be more attention and no rule will keep devs (especially 1st party) from gimping the base model for a blatantly superior Neo version. Same for Xbox. No way the next TLoU runs anywhere similar on Neo as the base model. Base model will be half res/frames, missing key effects, AI, etc. I can see it already.

Kleptic2890d ago (Edited 2890d ago )

^this...

This all began when AMD's apu road maps showed 14nm architectures and radically improved gpu's within them...which happened earlier this year...This is the first gen using off the shelf PC parts almost entirely...and there isn't a single PC part that is actually sold...unchanged...for 7+ years...stuff gets discontinued; it becomes more expensive to keep producing dated hardware than it is to offer better stuff at the same price or even lower...

the question then was simply would this reduce this generations lifespan, or have console upgrades mid gen?

this is happening...The scorpio thing is a weirder one, though...AMD's road map placed a gpu ceiling around 280x like performance...the leaked info that Eurogamer had showed a close to 280x gpu being in the Neo...that is, according to AMD, the highest performance gpu they can get inside an APU right now (and that is going to be the flagship desktop apu later this year)...

But Polygon's claims of an even faster Xbox One upgrade...? that's trickier...if correct, the upgraded xbox is NOT using an APU...it would have to be some sort of discrete gpu (possibly cross-fired with an updated apu, you can do that with PC, but its more problematic than just a single powerful card)...Or it's Polygon being typcially incorrect per usual...and the updated Xbox will fall more in line with the neo...

but I'd say it is 99% certain the 'neo' and 'scorpio' are happening..I won't say just how much better they will be, but they will DEFINITELY have a new and more powerful APU...it has to, no way around it, and according to Eurogamer's write up on the neo a month or so ago...AMD, Sony, and MS knew this would be the case all along...

coreyweb2890d ago

that's all these upgrades are actually going to be....or at least all we'll see at E3. VR bundles with slight upgrade consoles to support them. All this crap is just the rumor mill running on full cylinders to hype people for E3.

We're not gonna see anything crazy at E3 other than hopefully some cool games and probably too much focus on lame VR. I'm soooo not interested in VR.

Magnes2891d ago

I better not pay the same price for a game as those getting more .

TheCommentator2891d ago

It's one game that can be played on two versions of a console, how else could it possibly work?

Magnes2891d ago

Whatever, we all know as game developers strive to take advantage of an upgraded Xb1 they will worry less and less how it will run on the original xb1.

Majister-Ludi2890d ago

Because it's smart business you bellend. If they want the new consoles to do well it makes sense for them to offer some kind of trade or rebate. Otherwise there will be a large contingency of people who will just say fuck it and keep there old consoles.

Vasto2891d ago

Yes, I think they should.

Yui_Suzumiya2891d ago

Me too.. suprised anyone would disagree..

Rookie_Monster2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

Agreed, at least we know MS would as they have offered console trade ins for newer systems at their own MS store throughout this generation from not only a used X360 but also PS3 as well. No doubt they will offer similar trade ins for XB1 and PS4 owners looking to upgrade to the most powerful home console ever made.

Sony, since they don't have their own Sony stores anymore, guess other retailers like Gamestop will be gamers only option into upgrading to a Neo.

Gamestop is currently offering $250 for a used PS4 trade in credit so those that want the most out of their current PS4 value, I think this is the last chance to do so. After E3, the value will plummet. So for those that are planning to get a Scorpio or Neo, now is a great time to trade in your PS4 and stock up on store credits.

jb2272891d ago

"Agreed, at least we know MS would as they have offered console trade ins for newer systems at their own MS store throughout this generation from not only a used X360 but also PS3 as well."

How is it some foregone conclusion that MS would do this, or that Sony would not? What you describe is a completely different thing, a strategy to goose numbers & put as many boxes in homes as possible. Just like they gave away Win10, there has to be some kind of benefit for MS to do these things, they aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. To automatically assume that they will basically give away what is rumored to be a significant piece of hardware is just asinine. We don't even know how much these systems cost, but its not like Xbox operate in their own special sphere, they still have to answer to the parent company of Microsoft, and in light of the entire profit sucking platform of Xbox relative to Microsoft itself, the execs won't be foaming at the mouth to hand over tens of millions of dollars in hardware for no real reason.

Instances like these you really show your true colors, regardless of how much you "day one" everything Sony.

WhoCaresWhatMyNameIs2891d ago

@jb227

I don't know if you ever check the Sony online website before, but they don't offer trade in. Sony brick and mortar stores don't exist anymore. Microsoft has an online store and they offer trade ins. So yes, Rookie's point is valid.

Yes, Gamestop will plummet the value of trade-in for these older systems once they're announce Scorpio and Neo at e3 due to people that will trade in for new hardware.

Rookie_Monster2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

What WhoCaresWhatMyNameIs said.

Exactly. I always do my research before posting. The MS store has been doing trade ins with old consoles for XB1 and X360 for years now. Sony doesn't offer that even when their store were here years ago and now they are gone, it is impossible even if they wanted to start one. Gamestop is your best choice and price will plummet when news break at E3. All Facts

Jb227 "Instances like these you really show your true colors"

I don't have a true color btw, I bleed Green and Blue. ;)

darthv722891d ago

No previous console company has offered a trade in / up program. Why start now? When i buy a new bluray player I dont get the option to trade in my existing one. Hell i don't even get the option to trade in my old phone when i got a new one because I had it for 4 years and it wasn't under any contract.

These are gaming systems, consumer electronics... not cars or phones that are under contract to trade in after a certain period of time. this is more of a case of early adopters vs those who wait (like myself). Once new content comes out that only works for the Neo and Scorpio would it become dependent on the individual to decide if they want to upgrade.

And yes... there will be exclusive content for both no matter what the suits say. It's unavoidable.

DrierofLeaves2891d ago

Actually, Nintendo has with the 3DS and New 3DS

rainslacker2891d ago

Microsoft store had it for the X1 in their stores. Could also trade in a PS3 or PS4. I don't think they've done it across the board by offering rebates to retailers though.

WhoCaresWhatMyNameIs2891d ago

@darthv72

Sounds like you don't visit the Nintendo and Microsoft store often.

UltraNova2891d ago

Darth, I would agree with you if your argument excluded consoles, why? Because consoles have been traditionally upgraded every 5-8 years, the consumer expected this and it was the accepted reality as is yearly phone upgrades. Now they almost surely aim to force of us into upgrading every couple years, that's the problem.

As I said before, I'm not against new tech but I feel the industry and consumer are not ready for this just yet. Plus I suspect both Sony and MS planned this all along and that's why they released weak a** consoles this gen.

Thatguy-3102891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

I honestly think that's what's going to happen. I mean they don't have to but people would respect them a lot with that type of gesture.

Eldyraen2891d ago

Closest we'll see is maybe some store accepting trade ins with bonus credit going towards new console kit (GameStop). Any more than that is a pipe dream and unrealistic.

It would be nice but it would set a precedent they probably wouldn't want to deal with later, on top of cutting profits or adding losses at release.

Some stores/manufacturers do similar things for PC hardware (within say 3-6 months of purchase) but even that is rare.

Aenea2891d ago

LOL, no, stupid idea....

iTechHeads2891d ago

The whole reaction around these new consoles is stupid.

DrierofLeaves2891d ago

And yet this is not unprecedented, Nintendo did this exact same thing with the New 3DS, and they offered a trade in program just fine.

rainslacker2891d ago

I don't think it's a stupid idea. MS will probably want to generate interest and sales of it's new hardware so they can retire the old hardware quicker. Sony may be in the same boat, but just yesterday they stated they are at the point where they start harvesting profits. That made it seem that's where they want to be, and not disrupt that with new consoles which means they have to wait another couple years to start harvesting....which is a boat MS would be in as well. MS just may have more interest given PS is getting more marketshare, so they have less to lose going forward.
