Shots Fired As Bungie Takes A Jab At No Man’s Sky

Destiny Design Head talks No Man’s Sky procedural generation and UI aesthetics

Bungie is one to talk where they boasted so high and what we got (although subjective-good) was not a story rich space opera game they promised. It was a space MMO, which they time and time again clarified wasn't an MMO.

I could explain more why Bungie shouldn't take shots, but "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain "
Destiny "Campaign" enders will understand.

kitsune4512789d ago

"Cotton stated that for Bungie, just creating a huge world, something he referred to as ‘real estate’, is not enough for a good experience. It is very important to fill that world with interesting things to do, otherwise the players would get bored."

Literally the biggest criticism about Destiny is how boring and repetitive it is.

bouzebbal2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

A random generated world was for me the main scepticism i had against this game. The world makes much more sense and is much more enjoyable when the designer had control over every aspect.
The gazillion number of planets to discover is lame, they could have focused on like 100 planets with each one its own specific things rather than releasing a tech demo.
I still believe this gae should have been a VR launch title, the weaknesses would have probably been eaten up by the VR immersion.

Goldby2789d ago

@Kitsune.

But you have to give them props, they made an entire community of First Person Shooters look forward to racing. lol

Ya bungie really shouldn't be taking stabs at Hello Games,

mikeslemonade2788d ago

lol Bungie has been overrated since Halo 2. Destiny deserves the same crticisms as No Man Sky.

madmonkey012789d ago

destiny has never been an mmo

ServerBOT2789d ago

I would call it a lite-MMO but even then at least the gameplay was fun even the story was also pretty much NIL.

Wrex3692789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

I have seen the end of No Man's Sky and I saw the abyss looking back, and Sean Murray's laugh echoing deep into my soul. A soul so cold, now, only time will tell if it will ever see light again.

Goldby2789d ago

you saw the center of your galaxy, not the universe.

MagicBeanz2788d ago

Here's how you and everyone else can see the light again, dont pre-order games, dont buy day one, and wait for legit reputable reviews.

_-EDMIX-_2789d ago

Lol I can't even say Destiny is a space MMO as much as it's an MMO in which some of the levels you could see space but technically speaking here on Earth you could look towards the sky doesn't necessarily mean that all games are space-based because of it lol

Define "space" lol

vegasgamerdawg2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Didn't read the article, did you? It's OK. In the article it explains they were just joking around. All gaming companies copy off one another it a common and accepted practice. This is click bait, you and your fanBOY friends fell for it hook, line and sinker.

JasonKCK2789d ago

SMH people just read the thing before posting.

baelfyrekse2788d ago

What would be the fun in that? Nope, I far prefer the narrative, as presented, without any context provided and the conversations that ensue. I can go elsewhere for the story :)

Erik73572789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Bungie does some things spectacular still though even with the game Destiny. As bad as destiny was, the environments were pretty damn breath taking , core combat mechanics were solid, and the score of the soundtrack was great. Lacked weapon variety and mission variety and a actual good story with characters.

Overall a bad game because of all that but it has a lot of promise for a franchise and if they improve on the things said above it could of been a really good game.

2789d ago
baelfyrekse2788d ago

Well-said and there is really nothing to add here. Glass houses and all that.

Onenyte2788d ago

your right, bungie should keep well out of this one

lol the campaign.......oh the campaign

Godz Kastro2788d ago

What does any of that have to do with the subject at hand?

donthate2788d ago

I have no love for Bungie, but Bungie is right though, which is exactly what I also said a while back. Procedurally generated means boring world. It's like having a computer make a game. You like games, because a human made it for humans to enjoy!

Lime1232784d ago

I know that you have no love for Bungie - they were once Microsoft's flagship first-party studio and now they are making exclusive deals with PlayStation.

Loktai2788d ago

I came here to say the same damn thing,..

Bungie made destiny out to be a huge galaxy with so many planets.. then it comes out and there
are like THREE places to go and one map per place... like are you KIDDING me? The game was fun enough
IMHO but the game was so small and so different from what was promised. I was in the alpha and we all thought
that was some small taste of the game like OH MY GOD THE FULL GAME WILL BE INSANE .... then it comes
out and there are ... like less than half a dozen "Areas" in this multi-planet space FPS.... Sigh.... Bungie please dont open your mouths.

TheSaint2788d ago

Glad I'm not the only one laughing at Bungie for being hypocrites.

lvl_headed_gmr2788d ago

Just when we all thought no game could be as big of a disappointment as The Order....another Sony endorsed game comes out as a major MAJOR disappointment.

PS4 is the worst console to own as a gamer.

LMFAO at ANOTHER PS exclusive GT Sport getting delayed.

Wvery Sony exclusive has been delayed. Terrrible console.

TheTwelve2787d ago

Destiny wasn't even a good MMO...

No man's sky over destiny any day

Gaming_Cousin2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Hell no. The constant grinding to get to the next planet, no story, most disappointing ending, stupid creatures, crap space battles, terrible physics, paralyzed NPCs, the list goes on and on... Burn it with holy water I say

Lon3wolf2789d ago

No constant grinding to get to next planet (plutonium and Tharium 9 everywhere), even making warp cores isn't a grind. Story is there but you need read about it on monoliths etc. (Destiny had same issues with regards story). Space battles are ok once you have upgraded your ship, admittedly not great but still not really bad. Physics are fine as this is not a simulation.

Gaming_Cousin2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

@Lon3wolf

If it takes hours and hours to reach a goal to the center of the universe doing the same thing over and over again, (ie using the mining tool to gather resources) that is exactly what grinding is.

Shooting rocks and pieces of them are floating randomly in the air and you come here calling it 'fine' physics...
Do you know how gravity works?

TimeSkipLuffy2789d ago

constant Gjalla grinding each week... and still no Gjalla until it was put to it's end life cycle :D

thorstein2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Clearly a statement from someone who hasn't played the game but would rather parrot what other know nothings have said.

The physics one gives you away. "Stupid creatures" lulz. *Walks around earth, sees animals everywhere, none are very bright. Reads comments about NMS* "Constant grinding to get to the next planet" Anyone who has played 5 hours of the game knows this is false.

Please tell me where in the human experience have we ever encountered anything but "stupid creatures?"

Goldby2789d ago

@Thorstein, i once saw a squirell trapped by about 6 pinecones. that cage would be his death i had not helped him pbreak out of prison... i kicked a pinecone away and that little bugger ran faster than Bolt on Cocaine.

@Gamingcousin.

The constant grind of Destiny is actually worse in my eyes. same 4 spots on every map to gather the resources to upgrade the gun you have been playing since day one to hopefully get, only to get it and realise its not that good so you move on grinding to the next one.

Every game has grinding in it. you just seem to like fps grinding over survival grinding. you probably dont like games like 7days to die, dont starve, minecraft

Gaming_Cousin2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

@Thorstein
First off you made a quote that is not what I said. The objective of the game is to get to the center of the universe. To accomplish this, it takes hours and hours of grinding. No where did I mention traveling to planets in my comment yet you decide to fabricate a quote of me

"The physics one gives you away. "

Sure it does. I presume you have the No Man's Sky: Flawless Sean Murray Special Edition

Look me up on steam "Alpha" (I have a pink animated teddy bear icon) and you will see that I have the game.

You act as if people who don't like the game (which are many, many people btw) do not own the game and are making things up. Just because you enjoy the game doesn't mean everyone else has to.

Maybe instead of being impulsively defensive of the game (as indicated by all your previous comments) take the time to write your comments out so that you don't look like someone who ends up looking foolish.

peewee110162789d ago

WTF you talk about grinding . HAVE YOU PLAYED DESTINY. Thats all it is.

subtenko2788d ago

U fool, there is hardly any grinding to get to a planet. You dont know how to play then. Laser beam plutonium, and follow the directions to craft a warp cell if u wanna warp to the next system. To craft a warp cell takes no longer than an hour and Im giving extra time with that.

ssj272788d ago

Do you realize there is no space . No gravity? Other than what nasa nwo and Hollywood makes you think there is? Do yourself a fsvor and research flat earth .. stop believe science fiction is real. Even the name say so

yeahokwhatever2788d ago

ApolloTheBoss2789d ago

You and me both. Either games aren't really my cup of tea.

nX2789d ago

I found that NMS is actually a great game for relaxing after work.

Goldby2789d ago

@NX

That what i tell al my friends, you ahve to be at the end fo the day or relaxed beyond belief to fully enjoy this game. theres no timer dooming the world, there no big bad boss guy you ahve to kill. just chill, relax and do your own thing

KiRBY30002789d ago

Overhyped Overpriced Grindfest over Overhyped Overpriced Grindfest anyday...

IamTylerDurden12788d ago

You over hyped No Man's Sky, not Hello Games. The game was shown in dozens of demos pre launch and it was exactly what we got. Mine, trade, fight, explore, survive, is that not what u do in the game? We all knew it was a sp experience and that it would have no significant story. What were u expecting? Mass Effect?

Sm00thNinja2789d ago

No Destiny was playable and didn't crash. Also had pretty good multi-player and a pretty deep lore once you dug in despite being a disappointment as well

Goldby2789d ago

minus the fact that Destiny had horrible network issues at first, hit boxes weren't working at launch very weel, the two games are very similar in that you have to go looking for the lore. only difference, Bungie makes you leave the game to read it

Sm00thNinja2789d ago

True Goldby minus the network issues. I never had an issue. Multi-player was serviceable and the game encouraged it although in the worst way. Like it's 2016 and still no raid matchmaking? I've put about 50 hrs into NMS though and Im still enjoying my time but the games flawsales are glaring and the game is a shell of what was initially promised. In that regard the games are very similar both disappointing and nothing like we were led to believe but multi-player gives Destiny longer legs

XanderZane2788d ago

LMAO!! No.. Just no. If this game was on the XB1 and PC only, all those agrees you have would be in the disagree column right now. No Man's Sky is garbage and gamers were completely lied to and ripped off. The fact that Sony and Amazon were offering refunds is enough proof of that. Didn't see anyone offering refunds for Destiny. I'm sure Hello Games knew the game wasn't complete, yet they had no problems releasing it for $60. No Man's Sky needed at least another 2+ years with the team they were using. Sony obviously didn't want to wait.

UnHoly_One2788d ago

Just for the record, I am normally accused of being an Xbox Fanboy and I bought No Mans Sky on PS4 and I love it.

;-)

mechlord2788d ago

i dont think you have played either game dude.

XanderZane2787d ago

I've played them both. Both games are repetitive and a grind, but I had a lot more fun playing Destiny with friends and I had playing No Man's Sky by myself. No Man's Sky should have been $20. I think if it was, it wouldn't be getting as much backlash as it currently it. Hello Games should have been upfront with everyone and said the game is still a work in progress and lowered the price of the game to $20. That would have been fair and it probably would have sold even more copies, cause everyone was hyped to play it.

XanderZane2787d ago

There's no longer a demand for the game and I'm sure Gamestop has already refunded 1000's of games within the first week. They don't even want to see a trade in for this game. They are probably selling them used for $29.99 now I bet.

RedDevils2788d ago (Edited 2788d ago )

Both game are garbage. Thank to Gamestop I get my full refund without paying a cent within 7 days return lol

A US$500M game budget vs a 15 people dev team, really?

CorndogBurglar2789d ago

It doesn't take a huge budget to make a menu system that isn't frustrating to use.

yeahokwhatever2788d ago

and yet destiny managed to do it despite their 500m budget.

nv0s2788d ago

Clearly you weren't a vanilla destiny player.

CorndogBurglar2788d ago

@nv0s

Yeah I was. I had Destiny at launch and played it for about a year straight.

There was nothing horrible about Destiny's menus.

hellothere19772789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

well, if you're going to rationalize that by saying HG only had a 15 member team, then why the hell did they charge the same price as a developer that actually put in $60/game worth of resources and development costs into their game?

christocolus2789d ago

Well said. They should have priced it similar to other indies. Instead they priced it same as AAA titles with huge development budgets i.e Witcher 3 ,COD, Fallout4, GTA5, Halo 5, Uncharted 4 etc. Heck.even Ratchet and Crank was priced lower than NMS. WTH were they thinking?

donthate2788d ago

Not only did they charge you $60, but Hello Games also underdelivered on their promises.

IceMan5162788d ago

Destiny had 100's of people working on destiny and $500Mil to burn and they did not put $60 worth of content either

lelo2play2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Doesn't matter the budget or the number of people involved in the game development. Both games are priced at 60€ so they should be treated and criticised equally.

Majister-Ludi2789d ago

And yet I play golf with friends which was made by 2 guys far more than either of those boring grind fests.

Jon_Targaryen2788d ago

You're literally too stupid to insult....

babadivad2788d ago (Edited 2788d ago )

I can't believe there's still so many people defending this game. NMS is literally an endless treadmill of mind numbing grinding.

Either you stay put, grind materials to stay alive on your current planet, and catalogue creatures for no apparent reason than to catalogue them.

Or you can grind to the center of the galaxy just to start the entire process over again. There's no depth, no customization, no community, no anything. Just mind numbing grinding. That's it.

I really want to know why people think this game is fun. A real answer, not "It's not for everyone". What are you doing in this game that you're finding enjoyment from? The game is just soulless.

kaizokuspy2788d ago

Relaxing, checking new planets for weird creatures etc. It's a casual experience. I play it on occasion to unwind from my competitive games. I find enjoyment and peace in that sense. Grinding really dissapates once you have max gear, tool, and exo suit. I just stock up and go explore. Named a planet Gary, and all the creatures and planets a variation of gary.

Bzone242788d ago

It's a $60 game vs a $60 game.

Says the company who's "gameplay" videos also misled gamers in what they were actually getting at launch. How long did it take for Saturn and The Reef to be actually playable again? And what about those Talent Points?

Goldby2789d ago

or when you jump into a friends session you see the ship drop you off, or...TRADING!

Pocketpair Studio Boss Calls Out Tencent For Developing A Palworld Clone

The game in question appears to be dubbed Auroria on Steam, which shares a plethora of similarities with Palworld.

Inverno20h ago

No offense but Palworld isn't that original either, with that said… ew Tencent no thank you. I love the survival genre but all these half baked early access games have ruined the genre for me.

exputers5h ago

>Palworld isn't that original either

Can't disagree with that, but it did spin the Pokemon dynamic in a unique way, you gotta give Pocketpair that. Now by doing so, prepare for a ton of Palworld clones, both on PC and mobile.
