Slim release sees Xbox One hardware sales rocket 1,000%

The release of the firm's new slim 500GB and 1TB SKUs saw Xbox One sales rise 989 per cent week-on-week.

The Xbox One had a 71 per cent share of the hardware market for the week ending September 24th, according to GfK data obtained by MCV. That’s an increase of 76 per cent year-on-year.

Genuine-User2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

Good for Microsoft. I was tempted to buy the Xbox One S last week as well because it was going for such a great price of £199. But I kept my wallet in check and decided against it. I already have an Xbox, and I don't plan to buy a 4K TV and UHD movies for another year and a half at least.

Overload2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

Edited: I didn't see the 71%.

Edit 2: Nevermind. The 71% increase in Xbox's weekly market share, numbers that are placed against their own. Not the overall market. The 76% YOY is because nothing launched that week last year.

These numbers are only OK, dressed up to look amazing.

Think about it, a 989% increase leading to only a 71% increase in market share.....

Something is not right there.

Here is a breakdown.

Genuine-User2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

That can't be right. Are you saying the Xbox One was selling far less than PS4 in UK?

Team_Litt2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

? It had 71% share of the hardware sales...

2766d ago
christocolus2766d ago

Wth are you trying to say? Lol

Overload2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

76% YOY only matters if we know what last years numbers were.

The 71% of hardware sales in the more impressive number. But the Xbox One OG was on fire sale, so we don't even know if it has to do with the Xbox One S or the OG.

4Sh0w2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

"The 71% of hardware sales in the more impressive number"

-True..so either way you look at these are great numbers for Xbox, both platforms have hardware sales going on, still doesn't automatically translate into much higher unit purchases unless there is significant interest in the brand.

I think Microsofts moves like BC, PC play anywhere, crossplay efforts, preview program, constant improvement of X1 features, growing games library and Phil Spencer's messaging has just had a overall positive momentum on the Xbox brand recovering from the BS doom n gloom of the early days of "Kinect will spy on you", fake scare tactics and misinformation...some of which was self inflicted mix messaging on their part as well.

ThePope2766d ago

Quick! Overload you need to put spin on this ASAP!!! Oh wait you already did HAHAHAHA

Overload2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

@4show

Yea, at 71% it really doesn't matter. It had a good month. Sorry about the 1st comment, I hate baseless percentages. 76% YOY means nothing based on a monthly output.

The 71% is a meaningful number.

4Sh0w2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

@Overload

OK, cool....glad you can admit that.

Automatic792766d ago

@Overload

Do you work for Sony? Geesh all I see you do is hate on Xbox One but praise the hell out of Sony.

S2Killinit2766d ago

It had a strong week. Great for MS. But the bigger picture was that it didnt outsell the PS4 in the month in case you are wondering.

Team_Litt2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

How did you miss it? It was in the article AND description! Face it, you came in here for the sole purpose of downplaying positive Xbox news and developed a blindness to facts that weren't even remotely hidden.

Also its not a 71 percent increase in share, it's a 71% share of the market for the week.
For every 100 consoles sold, 71 of those were Xbox one. Just think about that for a minute. Ps4, Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU, and possibly the handhelds shared only 29% of the sales while the rest was Xbox One.
You quite simply cannot downplay and have any shred of credibility left.

butchertroll2765d ago

Lol at disagree votes here. Outstanding.

JasonKCK2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

Overload you should really take a break from commenting. The past few weeks your comments have been nothing but pure desperation and embarrassing.

Grievous2765d ago

Of course. Whenever percentages are thrown around instead of cold hard numbers you know what's up.

donthate2765d ago

Damage control!

First it was the Scorpio announcement is going to stiffle Xbox One S sales, then it beat PS4 the month. Then it was, because it was a new console launch. Then the Xbox beat the PS4 again for another month.

Now we see more momentum, and now the measuring stick is only against MS themselves.

Either way, MS is making major headwinds. It's amazing how since E3 things have turned around for MS. They are on the offensive now so Sony better be prepared. After all, Sony has been skating on pure luck since 2013.

.....

But Xbone is selling less than PS4 UK since launch. So, yes, it's right. You should check the PAL threads on NeoGAF. PS4 is dominating in software sales too.

bleedsoe9mm2766d ago

i had the same plan but folded when i heard how incredible FH3 and Gears was in 4k (upscaled) HDR it adds a level of realism that has to be seen to be believed . scorpio is going to be a monster in true 4k .

EddieNX 2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

Same I plan on buying an NX a Scorpio and a a 4ktv next year :s happy with my vanilla Xbone atm.

TheCommentator2765d ago

Just think:

The XB1 is selling 1000% better right now in spite of having been announced alongside the development of Scorpio for next year. People were saying how stupid it was to "kill" 1S sales with the simultaneous announcement, and to a certain extent they are right, but Scorpio is going to be massive for MS if 1S sales are any indication of what consumers want. Consumers seem to want a 4K system with 4K BluRay, streaming, and gaming (upscaled, of course) all in One package. When Scorpio launches with native 4K/60 in games like Forza 7, it's on like Donkey Kong.

Father__Merrin2765d ago

your better of waiting for scorpio then, i wouldnt buy an xbox one s unless i wanted the uhd movie playback. phat xbox one is good enough for me

PistolsAtDawn2765d ago

It makes sense if you have an X1 but not a 4k tv to skip it.....but I must say playing FH3 on a 70" 4k tv with HDR is fn awesome!!!! Even after playing the demo a ton. Its making me hope that Pro and Scorpio focus less on 4k than solid games with more ai/effects etc at 1080/60 with hdr

butchertroll2765d ago

People who thinking that Xbone will surpass PS4 in UK because Xbone had one good week are hilarious.

You should go back to reality.

Good for them, it's a much better unit than the original.

G20WLY2766d ago

It is good for them, but they're comparing year-on-year sales for launch week of a revised model to a late-summer week for a 2 year old console, which seems like an odd comparison. You need to see how things plateau to make a fair comparison.

There needs to be a sense of perspective. This is as weird a comparison as it would be to compare X1S week 1 sales to XB1 original week one sales - it kinda doesn't mean much.

Don't get me wrong, any boost is a welcome one for sales and good news is goods news. Here's hoping it has the legs to continue the strong sales through the holiday season.

G20WLY2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

Disagrees. May I ask why? Seems logical, but I may have missed something, I'm only human.

EDIT: @below, I get that, but why can't we talk about the stats? If people cant debate it, why disagree, it's just confusing and those people come off as simple cheerleaders? N4G is a confusing place, it's not like a proper forum - people take offense way too easily if you counter something and that doesn't fit with their preferred reality.

DeadlyOreo2766d ago

^Microsoft fanboys. I wouldn't worry about the disagrees lol.

Neonridr2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

@G20WLY - I think it was simply because it couldn't just be "Congratulations Microsoft". There had to be an asterisk beside any good news for them (according to you).

Not saying that what you said isn't valid. But ultimately we should be happy that it's actually selling much better now.

G20WLY2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

^Thanks Neon, but if you read my comment again you'll see that I both opened and closed with positivity, so it should have been pretty clear I'm not detracting from the good news. My point is that this is not the metric that should be used to demonstrate it. More sales is always good - and I said that clearly - it's just shame I went to the trouble of framing my point with that sugar coating and some still found it too hard to swallow.

I'm not sure how else I could have said it, but I'd welcome any advice on how to handle the easily bruised?

EDIT: @below, thanks man, nice to know there are some normal people out there! :o)

Salooh2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

Nah, you are just dealing with emotional fangirls. Good xbox gamers will respect your comment and will take it as positive and accurate. ^^

I honestly prefer the look of the original. Bright white is a stupid choice of colour. The S stands out like a sore thumb in my entertainment center, the big-ass original with it's auto-dimming light was completely anonymous.

Hopefully a matte black version isn't far off...

game4funz2766d ago

There's already one in a bundle I believe.

WiiU-Dude2765d ago

I agree. It's not that white isn't neat, but as you said it just sticks out. The Wii, fist 360s, XB1 S. I bought the black Wii U. Didn't really matter that it was the 'deluxe' model. I hope the Xbox One S comes in black SOON.

Gunstar752765d ago (Edited 2764d ago )

I never had a problem with the original also form factor. It fits in well with my other av equipment.

People who complained about how big it was obviously don't own an av reciever. Mine are huuuuge

DragonPaw2765d ago

Two great options for Christmas this year, especially PS4 owners. A PS4 owner might want a X1S just to be rounded and get the PS4 Pro without thinking twice about the Scorpio. Either/or.

For Xbox owners, it would be nice to replace their giant launch consoles and get a UHD drive. Not as much appeal for MS fans this Christmas, but they might want the PS4 slim to round out things out, too.

green2766d ago

"A new slimmed-down PS4 arrived earlier this month, but sales have so far been slow. PlayStation 4 had a market share of just 19 per cent last week, with unit sales declining 66 per cent year-on-year, although sales were up 22 per cent week-on-week. When the launch weeks for PS4 Slim and the 500GB/1TB Xbox One S are compared, Microsoft’s were stronger to the tune of 361 per cent."

New users are waiting for the Pro. The price difference between the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim is so small that it makes zero sense to buy the slim over the pro. This in my opinion is the reason why the sales of the slim in my opinion is slow and why the PRO will cannibalize sales of the slim.

game4funz2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

We will see.

Edit: by we will see I was referring to sales of the slim vs the pro. And whether or not people will buy a mid gen console already having the standard.

UltraNova2766d ago

There's nothing to see. You have to be crazy to buy a regular ps4 when you can wait for a couple months until the Pro launches.

I expect a significant increase in sales percentage for the ps4 pro over the OG ps4's monthly average.

kneon2766d ago

You can see here

https://www.amazon.com/gp/b...

The pro is #4 for September, though those units won't count until they actually ship. But if you look further down the list you have PS4 at #26, #53, #68 and #96 while the XB1s is at #36, #79, #80.

So the sales order is back to normal, though it may be that the Xb1s will sell at a higher average rate than before.

S2Killinit2766d ago

The PS4 percentages wont be as high because they were selling fast anyway. For example, Its harder to double 1000 units than it is to souble 1 units sold. So these percentages are decieving. Why not mention the numbers sold?

Currently the sales are back to normal with PS4 outselling xbox one S. Thats not to mention that some people are waiting for the Pro, as the preorders are showing.

MetalGearsofWar2766d ago

I agree. Why would people buy a PS4 when Pro is around the corner?

As for selling more than the slim, we shall see.

DragonPaw2765d ago

It is for people who are waiting for the Scorpio.

Ark_2765d ago

Because it's half the price right now. (The standard PS4, not the slim.)
A good price value ratio, if you ask me.

jaycptza2765d ago

Market share cannot be calculated per week it has to be life time, surely

2765d ago
WiiU-Dude2765d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

Lots of things could cannibalize here. If you don't have a PS4 yet. Do you buy a PS4Slim, PS4 Pro and then there is the VR set. A whole lotta money. If you have a current PS4 do you upgrade or buy VR. For the casual/average gamer it's a lot of crap to figure out.
