Quote: Famitsu is one of the outlets that went and asked Nintendo some questions about the Nintendo Switch. And they managed to get some pretty interesting answers!

They should have at least made 3DS and DS games backwards compatible.

SourtreeDing2736d ago

expected much its a new console

_-EDMIX-_2735d ago

You mean their new handheld? Have you actually seen the unit? It's a handheld, they could have easily had another port for 3DS or DS games considering it's using cartridges.

zeal0us2735d ago (Edited 2735d ago )

Well just because it uses cartridges it doesn't necessarily means you could pop in 3ds games and go with it. The switch cartridges look thicker than the 3DS cartridges. Plus we don't even if the switch is touch screen yet.

_-EDMIX-_2735d ago

@zea- I mean in some other part not in the same exact one but I understand what you mean

G20WLY2735d ago

Well, this just completely killed it for me. :(

I skipped Wii U as the best games were too infrequent or never came. If I can't at least play those while I wait for the Switch to get it's shit together, I'm not going to bother.

gamer78042735d ago

well the pspro and scorpio are fully backwards compatible w/ their predecessor, so its not a big leap to think the switch would be as well.

ZeroX98762735d ago (Edited 2735d ago )

Isn't the Wii U in Power Architecture? The NS is probably x86 which would explain the lack of backward compatibility right now. Lots better for ports though!

indyman77772735d ago (Edited 2735d ago )

"expected much its a new console" Last time I check Nintendo is king of backwards compatibility. So no we did NOT expect much. We expected what was normal for Nintendo. This totally slaps my first day enthusiasm down a lot.

If it was a Sony, or Microsoft console I would not be so hyped on backwards compatibility. Why? What is the difference? Because I have not played the Nintendo library of Many Mega JRPG titles, jrpg went to handheld and now I was thinking I could play them on a real sized screen.

Now if they say they will have digital releases of them then I would be back on full crazy for switch. Come on Nintendo you have to know people want to play your jrpg games on a screen larger than a 3dsxl.

Ol_G2734d ago

With only 1 screen people conveniently forget just to voice their misplaced opinion

kitsune4512734d ago

Day 1 backwards compatibility is only possible when the system is architecturally similar to the previous generations. Since nVidia Tegra is a significant departure from the previous SoC's, any attempts at backwards compatibility will have to come in the form of Virtual console, similar to Xbox One's BC. It is unlikely Wii U or even Wii games will ever be BC since the Switch will only be slightly faster than the Wii U and the architecture is completely different.

QUIMICOMORTAL2734d ago

well, the new MS console will be backwards compatible and you bet the nex console from sony will be as well.

darthv722734d ago

Well that is unfortunate about ds and 3ds games but it makes sense as there would only be a single screen in most respects. That of the tv or the portable. Not to mention if the portable screen even has any touch capabilities.

As for wiiu games, chances are that select games would get a patch for their digital version to be playable on the switch. It should have full virtual console support for nes, snes, n64 and even gcn and wii / wiiu games on top of its own so im not to worried.

Just want to know if it supports SD expansion, usb hdd support (for the base) and what size internal storage it has.

mikeslemonade2734d ago

lol casual gamers want it both ways. You want BC but then complain about the cost of the system. Which is it?

TheFirstClassic2735d ago (Edited 2735d ago )

Pretty sure it wouldn't work that well with this thing since there is technically just one screen working at a time. Guess they could have both screens on one screen like how emulators do ds games.

EddieNX 2735d ago

Yes and its rumoured to have a capacative touch screen which wouldn't work properly.

indyman77772734d ago

It can be like the 2DS and have a gap instead.

http://www.target.com/p/nin...

wonderfulmonkeyman2735d ago

You mean Wii and Wii U.
It may use cartridges, but it's a home console.
Still, I wouldn't have complained if it did allow 3DS games.
Well, maybe something digital in nature could work, since physical BC isn't happening...

gbsrnctaln2735d ago

ORLY? Is that why they just said that the unit with the screen on it is the main console and the dock is just a dock??? Lol monkey, I love reading your postcards from fantasyland!

wonderfulmonkeyman2735d ago (Edited 2735d ago )

@ GBSR & Edmix
Okay, then by your fallaciously loose definition, the Wii U was a portable console, too, because you could lug it around with a spare battery in a backpack, playing off the gamepad alone.
Having the ability to lug the guts of a home console around doesn't change the fact that it's a home console, and that the majority of Switch users will spend most of their time playing it at home.
With all of its home console quality games.

Nintendo's already confirmed that it's a home console first, portable second.
You're swimming so deep in a river of denial that you're practically drowning.

_-EDMIX-_2735d ago

Lol they just said the main device is the actual portable unit.

The dock does nothing but outs to the TV , exactly like with the leaks read and exactly like what my prediction stated a year ago that it would be a handheld that out to a TV.

The entire device all the functionality screen and everything is actually the unit you see people walking around with in the video, you know the portable...

badz1492735d ago

@monkeyman

Nintendo juat said that the tablet is the main unit and I think the system is useless without it unlike the Wii U which is usable without the tablet controller. So yeah...it's more a handheld with a TV out rather than a proper home console like Nintendo is trying to tell us here.

gbsrnctaln2734d ago

Even when its straight from nintendos mouth you dont believe it. How ironic lol

pcz2734d ago

nintendo are only saying its a home console because they dont want to put it in direct competition with the 3ds by marketing it as a handheld.

jholden32492734d ago

Right.

-plays home console games
-directly connects to TV
-has its own separate controller

Totally failing to understand how anyone would misconstrue this is a handheld. Yes it is portable- that is the whole nature of the selling point. But being portable doesn't inherently make it a handheld. This thing is console through and through, portability aside.

Old McGroin2735d ago

For Gods sake, it hasn't even been released yet, if yer that badly stuck try playing your old games on the systems ye bought them for.

pcz2734d ago

no BC is a deal breaker. i want to play wiiu games on the switch.

how will they have digital downloads on a console with carts? that little console is not going to have a hard drive. and if the dock does, that means you would only be able to play downloaded games at home.

DivineAssault 2734d ago

They said this is to replace the Wii U, not the 3DS.. So we might get a true handheld.. Possibly a smaller version of this with a flip screen..

Xx_Pistol_xX2734d ago

Some 3ds games have touch, gyro, camera and mic features. It would have kind of been in the same boat as the Vita TV when in docking mode. Plus we don't even know if a gyro or camera is in the switch.

TheUndertaker852734d ago

The Switch probably doesn't include touch features which DS, 3DS, and WiiU all use

-Foxtrot2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

Yeah I thought that was the whole point to use cartridges

I would like to play some 3DS Pokemon and Mario games on my TV

antikbaka2734d ago

from generation to generation they just make their fans buy the same games again and again. why would they change their mind this time?

MasterCornholio2736d ago

I had to rebuild the submission to make the link work.

I recommend looking at the credit URL since the translation is horrible.

pompombrum2735d ago

Well considering they already showcased Wii U games in the trailer, it's either got some form of backwards compatibility or they're releasing some remasters.

MasterCornholio2735d ago

It could be compatibility with digital Wii U games.

Summons752735d ago

there is a strong possibility that those are new games since both showed features and characters that weren't in MK8 and Splatoon. I hope they at least give us digital backwards compatibility.

Eamon2735d ago

Very likely to work with Wii U games that don't require motion controls, touch screen or dual-screen. Meaning expect to see Mario Kart and Smash Bros for Switch on launch.

PlatinumGX2734d ago

Splatoon is dual screen.

Eamon2734d ago

Well, I was referring to straight ports.

_-EDMIX-_2735d ago

I see so you have yet to hear that this is actually a handheld and it does not play discs correct?

pcz2734d ago (Edited 2734d ago )

obviously ultimate editions/game of the year editions featuring all the downloaded digital content, along with a few little extras. ie, trying to make people by the same shit all over again.

and lets face it, the games look exactly like wiiu games. ie no noticeable upgrade in graphics quality.

zelda- wiiu game

mario kart- wiiu game with bells and whistles

splatoon- wiiu game with bells and whistles

nba 2k17- big deal, a niche game outside of america where nobody gives a damn about basketball

skyrim- old game

mario switch- surprise surprise, another mario game that looks indistinguishable from galaxy and 3D world. it could have practically been either and nobody would be able to tell because we have seen it all before.

and, the sad thing is, what games they did show were probably not even running on actual switch tech, they were probably running on some pc, merely to show the games in the best possible light, for the purpose of the reveal. when the thing is actually in the wild, i'm willing to bet there is going to be a big downgrade.

i predict graphics worse than wiiu.

iTechHeads2734d ago

Remasters is probably the wrong word. More like ports. I mean this thing is using a Tegra chip. I don't even think that is more powerful than a Wii U.

vikingland12735d ago

This seem like a missed opritunity to me. 3DS & Wii U games bc would've been a nice extra. Plus it would've increased software sales because there are a bunch of 3DS titles that are fantastic. My wife plays the 3DS and I've helped her pick games for it. I would play/buy a bunch of those games if I could play on my TV.

indyman77772734d ago

You sir are a man after my own heart! My hope now is that they will at least make digital copies. I hope this translation (article ) is very off (they have been in the past and should have said the opposite).

BEASELY2735d ago

Missed opportunity. They could have kept selling the Wii U software that so many millions missed out on who will surely pick up a Switch.

iTechHeads2734d ago

But this is better though. They'll get Wii U owners to buy the Switch and buy Splatoon and all those games they loved on their wii u all over again.

Review: GameScent - Now you can smell your games | KnowTechie

KnowTechie writes: "The GameScent is a unique way to add immersion to your games. Thanks to its HDMI and 3.5mm jack, the device is versatile, so you can use it across your consoles and PC. However, it would be great to see a new range of scents since there are only six, and many smell similar to each other."
