Game Of Thrones Star Oona Chaplin Speaks Out About The Show's Nudity And Porn

CB
The hit HBO series Game of Thrones has often been criticized for its interpretations of sex, nudity, and sexual assault. Oona Chaplin, who played Talisa on the series, recently told TMZ that if anyone is turning into the fantasy epic just for the nudity might be wasting their time.

I don't think there's such a thing as too much nudity if it serves the narrative, but HBO shows in general have a habit of throwing it in just for the novelty of it. I like staring at naked women as much as any other straight guy, but when I'm trying to get into the epic sweep of a show like GoT, the nudity that they've so obviously thrown in for the hell of it just becomes a giant distraction. If it serves a contextual purpose then it's fine, but as Oona Chaplin ironically suggests, I can watch porn if I'm looking for gratuitous nudity...so why are HBO shows still throwing it in in an apparent attempt to attract some boner views? Or more accurately, I guess, why are people still defending the trend?

Have you even bothered reading the books? HBO toned down the sex and nudity significantly from the source material...

If people are getting distracted by sex scenes on a TV show they got issues.

Lamboomington2647d ago (Edited 2647d ago )

Not at all. OP's argument makes perfect sense. Sex scenes will be distracting if they don't fit. ie if it breaks the 4th wall and makes it obvious that it was put there for the sake of it.

Just like anything else can be out of place or distracting in a TV show or movie.

It's the same reason people found fault with Quiet's presentation, posing etc in MGS5. For them, it took them out of the world to see something which was done obviously for the sake of being sexy or erotic. It becomes even worse when Quiet is suppose to have a deep, serious storyline. The sexuality of the character felt out of place, just like any other aspect can feel out of place. Sexuality is not somehow exempt from these criticisms. You might disagree with this in the case of MGS5, and that's fine, but the criticism is a perfectly valid one.

It's subjective and defers from person to person. eg: in GOT, many people might feel that the nudity was justified in context. I feel this way about a lot of it, actually. I don't think it's there for 'porn', simply because it's never presented that way. Even with sex and nudity, I'm still engrossed in the story the majority of the time, and many of those scenes do serve a purpose imo.

There was one sex scene which I thought was very silly, and that was Rob and Talisa (Oona Chaplin). To me, it felt like it was thrown in there just so we could see Talisa naked. It came out of the blue and as much as I liked the eye candy, I still thought that it didn't fit in context, and broke the 4th wall a bit. Just my subjective opinion, but the criticism is entirely valid.

"If people are getting distracted by sex scenes on a TV show they got issues."
If a sex scene is out of place, then it is a distraction and has an adverse effect on the show. If it's done well, it won't. Just like anything else - humour, for example. Ofcourse, this is subjective.

If I want Nudity in my Drama Saga , I can easily rewatch Spartacus .

Oona Chaplin is too adorable. How she talks and everything.

Its amazing how we have come full circle back to prudishness. When I was a kid women were screaming about being allowed to "show their bodies" now its all "cover up for respect" and "hide the sex".

Youre kidding right? We used to not be able to show a pregnant woman, a toilet, or a couple sleeping in the same bed on television. Now we have "Naked and Afraid" on VH1. There is no full circle man, just a single path headed in a certain direction.

Funny, because the topic this board is tied to suggests otherwise. Lately alot of material, film or otherwise is censored so as not to "offend".

Watch this.
