Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Review - IGN

A fun, but flawed take on the Resident Evil series that fondly recalls the classics even as it ventures in a bold new direction.

Automatic792650d ago

Solid Review was expecting it to be a little higher, especially after going back to It's roots. However, still solid review.

Neonridr2650d ago

looks like other sites are giving it good scores. Overall it looks like a return to form of sorts..

naruga2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

i would rank it even lower ...5/10 ...this is NOT a RE game and also this not even a good game of the horror genre

also @ FOxtrot tottaly agree

DragonDDark2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@Naruga

Play the game first. Lots of reviewers are saying it's a resident evil game & it's back to its roots. Stop being ignorant.

@your replay: i've played all RE games & finished all of them. I've played RE1-2-3 on the PS1 on launch.

You're just being blind & ignorant here. All the reviews say it's back to its roots. RE's roots are those games you mentioned.

I'd rather listen to what people who actually played the game say. You didn't.

UCForce2650d ago

@naruga You are just being like @Foxtrot.

naruga2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@DragonDDark and rest ....go play RE1,2,3 (i doubt you ve ever finished them) then go play this s$%t .... you ll understand , no need for me to defend the old ones in comparison to this mess

Gaming_Cousin2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

FoxTrot and naruga are the only ones that go in every Resident Evil 7 article not realizing that barely anyone shares their opinion/views

Resident Evil 7 scored significantly higher than 6 and 5

Saying it isnt a Resident Evil game is stupid because it is a Resident Evil game

NapalmSanctuary2650d ago

@Gaming_Cousin Not everyone takes a vote before they settle on their own opinions.

bluefox7552650d ago

@naruga It IS an RE game. Just because it's not what you wanted, doesn't make it less of a game. That's a really childish way to look at it.

FPS_D3TH2650d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

@naruga foxtrots opinions are generally always negative, so why should we care again?

Babadook72649d ago

IGN still on its way downhill it seems. *facepalm

rainslacker2649d ago

@Naruga

What is a RE game nowadays? People have been complaining it hasn't been a RE game since RE4.

I was about to say IGN US are very unfriendly to games this generation. IGN Italy is my go to where the review matches the actual score.

2649d ago
-Foxtrot2650d ago

This looks like the only review which is telling the truth

RE6 lowered standards and now people are overpraising the new one

DragonDDark2650d ago

Oh please. Only one reviewer is telling the truth? Must be because you want it to fail.

rawshack2650d ago

If that was true we would both be wrong

moegooner882650d ago

Except RE6 was very enjoyable. Idiots just jumped on the hate bandwagon

trooper_2650d ago

Give it a rest Foxtrot.

Lenns2650d ago

Sometimes it's alright to admit you were wrong

Genuine-User2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Oh come on.

Edit @ your comment below: You're questioning the integrity of all the positive reviewers by being fixated on a few negative ones and that's a lot worse than the replies you've received by some of the members of N4G on this page.

-Foxtrot2650d ago

If people want to reply fine

If people want to have a different opinion fine

But if you reply and act shitty with immature personal attacks over opinions then seriously what's wrong with you

It's totally different if I reply to you and my comment is directly looking for that kind of reply but I haven't done that

Can't anyone be civil on here

UCForce2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Oh my god ! Are you really that selfish ? I'm sorry and I don't want to say this, but way too negative can make you emo. "Sigh" Also, I know you not responding because you think all of us are blind fanboy or something. This is one thing why I don't like about N4G.

Edit : @Foxtrot No, you just try negative that people don't like and it cause you deeply.

IamTylerDurden12650d ago

Resident Evil 7 is getting great reviews. It's an 86 on Metacritic, i know you're upset that it's actually a fantastic game.

Kornholic2650d ago

What is confirmation bias?

Neonridr2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

but it looks like it's actually a horror game again. Remember when Resident Evil and Horror went together? Yeah, most people don't either. For me, the series lost everything after 4. I give 4 praise because it was a good game, but it too started to lose the "horror" aspect. Revelations was the only good title in the series since 4 that was also a good game.

DragonDDark2650d ago

Oh Stop playing the victim card.

CorndogBurglar2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

You have to understand something , man. When you and people like Derceto show up in every single RE7 article leading up to release and talk about how bad the game is, and how it isn't a true RE experience, it makes it look like you guys just want it to fail. Especially when many comments of yours and others were completely misinformed.

We had multiple reports of the game being great by various people. Reports of all the things you guys were saying were wrong with the game being disputed by reports of people who actually played the game. Yet you guys still trashed it.

Now its out and the LOWEST score is a 7.7. Literally everything else is 8, 9, and 10. Say what you want about reviews, but when they all rate something similar, then its safe to assume we've got a great game on our hands. Yet you still continue to act like the game isn't good. Without playing it, I might add.

So I don't really know what you expect when all these reviews show up and prove you guys wrong.

OB1Biker2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

IGN 'the only review which is telling the truth'
Hahaha

Seriously anyway, is 7.7 bad now? It's about 8
I'm not into reviews at all and I don't rely on them but seems they all mostly agree to give it great reviews.

NatureOfLogic_2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

As a long time Resident Evil fan, I have to agree with Foxtrot here. This Resident Evil is a little similar to the classics but the lack of enemy types, third person camera view and slow moving zombies makes this nothing like the classics. It's huge missed opportunity IMO. They did get the atmosphere right, but that's about it.

Edit: This Resident Evil feels like a light version of the classics.

bluefox7552650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Lol, cause IGN is just known for their "honesty", please. Everyone seems pretty happy with it. It won't please everyone obviously, but it seems like a hit, haters notwithstanding. Here's the adult way to approach it:
"This game is not what I wanted, personally. It does not look like my cup of tea. Rather than trying to delegitimize it as a game, I will just accept that this game is not for me."

Erik73572650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Shhh, Playstation needs a VR poster child shhhhhhh get disagrees

_-EDMIX-_2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

.... lots of people on here are questioning if you even play games lol

@fox- why are you surprised by the comments and the downvotes? You spent a very long number of months talking against Resident Evil 7 but not really displaying legitimate facts or examples to prove your actual point many people including myself have actually asked you specifically what is not Resident Evil about this game and gave you a list of with the returning features.

You even made comments that were factually incorrect which I believe could be attributed to your lack of actually really playing this series in regards to the originals.

I'm not entirely sure why you hate this game but it sounds to me like you have a long list of things that you hate that you continuously talk about.

My issue is not even that you hate it it's simply that you don't really have much to back up your comments.

Resident Evil for the most part has been about
limited ammo
limited health
limited Weaponry
limited saves and puzzles

.... that is what Resident Evil 7 is, it even has item boxes.

Darkwatchman2649d ago

Nah, you're just a regressive gamer that doesn't allow developer's creative freedom and wants game franchises to remain stagnant forever.

Your mentality is "oh, it has this name?? That means it BETTER PLAY EXACTLY LIKE I WANT OR IT'S TRASH!!! I don't care if it's an ongoing series that has 10+ games. I'll still trash it for trying something new because I can't stand change.

I want the same crap every year. I want the same crap every iteration!!! Reinvention?? What's that? Experimentation??? What's that? Genre-bending or genre-defining? The hell are you talking about??? I only know stagnation!!!"

rainslacker2649d ago

So, only reviews that tell the truth are one's that conform to your opinion? You do understand the nature of subjective content don't you?

Just for the record, I'm not a RE fan, and really couldn't care less about the franchise, or if this is a "true RE" game or whatever, and was never into the originals on PS1 because I found the first two tedious....although they now have a nostalgic charm of sorts. Just curious how well it'll be received now that it's supposedly going back to it's roots, and I will admit I am interested in this game.

Kurdishcurse2649d ago

its so cute how u keep going to resi 7 articles to voice your thoughtless and purely emotional opinion. youve been setting this game up to fail even before it launched. so do yourself a favor, and come back when u have anything other than " i hate it, therefore its bad".

CrimsonWing692649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

You found a score you liked and discredit the majority of other scores that praise the game? C'mon man, that's like when researchers do sampling and only cherry pick results that prove their point.

The truth is far more critics liked this game than the one reviewer. On metacritic it holds an 86 from 44 critic reviews. Only 2 reviewers gave it a 7 and only 1 gave it a 5. The majority goes from 9-10. With the rest being on the 8s.

These are the same critics that lambasted RE6. So, I get that the direction isn't where you want the series to go but you need to not be delusional and say things to try to rationalize why everyone doesn't agree with your opinion.

DarXyde2649d ago

Don't you think you're only suggesting that it's "telling the truth" because it's consistent with your own beliefs about the title? Is it that difficult to believe Capcom made an "at least decent" game after Resident Evil 6?

Personally, I'm holding off on getting it for the simple fact that I'm kind of strapped for cash and there are other games I'd rather play within the next few weeks. I need to ask though, have you played Resident Evil VII yet?

Because, if not, I think you're being a bit unfair.

mysterious_warrior2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

I got the game. IMHO Its really an average game. Nothing more and nothing less. But you know because EVERYBODY else says its a good game it MUST be a good game. Such a fallacy

2pacalypsenow2649d ago

RE 1 was going to be fps so in a way it is returning to its roots

It's getting great reviews. Resident Evil 7 is an 86 on Metacritic.

http://www.metacritic.com/g...

migh_and_highty2650d ago

It's an effing number, don't let an arbitrary number judge whether the game is good or not.

Neonridr2650d ago

that should always be a given.. only you can decide for you :P

CorndogBurglar2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

While this is true, when you have damn near every review outlet providing close to the same scores, then you can bet they are right. In some cases, like this, its a well made, great game. But it may just be that its not up your alley, and thats fine. But that isn't a reason to say the game isn't good.

The same can be said about games with mediocre or low review scores. If the general consensus of reviews say close to the same thing then its probably accurate. But again, that doesn't mean you have to dislike it.

Like me. I can't get into Bloodborne. I've tried. I WANT to like it. It just isn't my thing. But I can at least recognize that its a great game, well made game rather than crapping all over it because of my personal taste.

MADGameR2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

The game does not diserve any higher rating. Capcom got extremely lucky to have gotten a 7.7 score. It should have been much lower than that for false advertisement. It is NOT an RE game at all. It is just another mainstream FPS game. I give it a 5.5 and that's being nice.

Low score.... I've been playing for 3 days. It is really great. I can give 9.0/10

81BX2650d ago

Agreed 7 and above is good

GoldPunch-TR2650d ago

C mon guys we all know 7.7 is low score for GAME reviews. Unfortunetely it is true.

IamTylerDurden12650d ago

Don't worry, this is one of the lowest scores. RE7 is getting Great reviews.

CoryHG2650d ago

reviewed by woman. i went there.

Veneno2650d ago

I admire the honesty!

rawshack2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Once again while everyone is giving 8 and 9s they give a 7 .to throw people off to make them read there article

King_Lothric2650d ago

That's been their strategy for more than a year now. Look at how IGN Italy gave it 9 to the same game. Even Destructoid gave it a perfect 10 score.

Resident Evil Fans Discuss Whether They Prefer First Or Third Person

Players have long debated the merits of third-person as opposed to first-person perspective in games and the topic has recently resurfaced on Reddit, this time concerning the long running Resident Evil series. The discussion so far has generated somewhat heated opinions from users on both sides of the argument.

Resident Evil has a long history of using both perspectives, with some entries in the series like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 offering players a third-person view, while others like Resident Evil 7 provided players with a first-person perspective. Some fans believe third-person allows for better visibility and control over the character, while others believe that first-person immerses you more deeply into the game's atmosphere.

Third always

It's what it's always been and how it's meant to be played whether it's fixed camera angles or over the shoulder.

Rockstar367d ago

There was a time when I would have agreed but if you've got a vr setup the 1st person RE's are on another level.

That being said, they can both exist because they're both fantastic.

Babadook7353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

Exactly. If there was no VR version available or possible I’d say 3rd person. But because of the extreme heightened immersion, VR trounces the flat screen version, so 1st person please.

Sonic1881367d ago (Edited 367d ago )

They should have the option to have both going forward imo. But I do prefer third person view

Levii_92367d ago

I love both and the new mainline RE games should stay in first person for at lest one more game that’s why i hated that Capcom for some reason added third person in RE8 .. like why ? What was the point ? It just lost what made the new games unique and different. Re7 is a gem and already such a classic, it’s RE1 of this generation or well the prevous generation i guess i should say and RE8 is bonkers and so fun. Such great games.

Goozex367d ago

First person. It just ramps up the intensity for me

What horror franchises could learn from Resident Evil

Resident Evil has remained the most popular horror franchise in video games for a long time. These are the reasons why.

The remakes are good examples

Resident Evil 2: "Here's how you do a remake"

Resident Evil 3: "Here's how NOT to do a remake"

NecrumOddBoy505d ago (Edited 505d ago )

I think RE3 was actually pretty good but just short and flawed a bit. If Capcom would’ve just put the RE3 campaign and it’s dodge mechanic into RE2 (maybe called it RE Raccoon City Chronicles) and placed the the game in a canonical order LEON A, CLAIRE B, JILL C; then dropped the multiplayer nonsense, it would have been the most perfect package. I enjoyed RE3’s ties in to 2 and they streamlined it well. It just was a flawed deliver.

-Foxtrot505d ago

Oh don't get me wrong, it was a good game but compared to RE2 it was a step back

It was lazier, felt rushed, shorter in comparison and totally the wrong way for Capcom themselves to do a remake

Luckily they got the memo because I'm sure I read RE4 was supposed to be done by the team that did RE3 before they rebooted development.

RE3 needs a directors cut, it needs to be longer, they need to include the choices, add the other locations in by expanding/reworking the current story and also rework how Nemesis works. I want to explore more the city, even if areas have nothing to do with the main objectives and only exist to explore for collectibles or to find new gear.

staticall505d ago

Punching huge bolders while being in a volcano sounds cool on paper, but looks very dumb.
More QTEs = worse experience (RE6 mostly)
Sometimes big doesn't mean "better" (RE6 bosses mostly)
Not every game's suppose to have a multiplayer component (RE3 remake, Umbrella Corps). But sometimes it just works (Outbreak)
Small stamina bar for melee attacks is dumb (RE6)
Locking better skills behind drip-fed skill point drops is awful (RE6)
Do not give your flagship IPs to outside studios. But if you did, heavily control the game quality and direction (Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City)

FallenAngel1984504d ago

For me Resident Evil’s biggest impact on the gaming medium will always be that over the shoulder control scheme pioneered by RE4

Death in the Family: A Look Back at Resident Evil 7

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "With Resident Evil Village out imminently, it seems like an ideal time to revisit its immediate predecessor, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a game that steered the franchise back to its roots. After replaying the game this past week, I can say with confidence it remains one of my favorites in the long-running series, due to its scary and disturbing atmosphere, challenging boss battles, twisting narrative, breathless action, and old-school survival-horror gameplay. It's certainly not perfect — there isn't much enemy variety and the final boss is a letdown — but overall it's a great game worthy of the name Resident Evil."
