Nintendo: We Prioritized Improved Response Over Making Zelda: Breath of the Wild Prettier

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Art Director stated that the team prioritized improved response (frame rate) over making the game prettier during development.

This is probably the closest Nintendo will get to acknowledging the graphics downgrade from the original E3 2014 trailer.

Can't believe we are still experiencing graphics downgrade in 2017! Is it so difficult to just show a video of what the actual gameplay looks like before release? Still the looks pretty anyway.

KaiPow2579d ago

It was probably adjusted for parity with the WiiU version. Even though it's an inferior system in terms of hardware, Nintendo isn't the type of company to make gamers on one platform feel worse off than another. Just look at Twilight Princess.

MadeForGaming2579d ago

still doesnt justify the frame drops on the switch version, on the contrary, if it was the Wii U fault, we shouldve expected a flawless transition on the switch

zaherdab2579d ago

@MadeForGaming ... No they kept the frame rate drops on switch to keep the parity with Wii U as well !!!!

Cybermario2579d ago

i am going to go as far as to say it doesn't look prettier because the switch version is a WiiU port, but i can be mistaken

GtR35olution2579d ago

What about the bad frame rate issues?

mikeslemonade2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

The draw distance, aliasing, and pop-in are bigger problems than frame rate.

GtR35olution2579d ago

Lemonade man, pop ins, aliasing, stuttering frame rates and bad graphics are all acceptable for a game to get 10s.

xPhearR3dx2579d ago

@Cybermario

Honestly, I didn't think it would look that much better. I got the Wii U version first, and then picked up a Switch last week and Zelda looks A LOT better on the Switch than Wii U. It's more vibrant, crisper and if you have a monitor with game mode, it looks even better. It's one of those games that looks better in person than in screenshots. I went back and looked at it on my Wii U and everything just seemed blurry and dull.

conanlifts2579d ago

My understanding was that the switch version wasn't started until 2016. If so it was ported in less than a year. This would not allow much time to tweak things even if they wanted to.

bouzebbal2578d ago

BOTW resolution and jagged edge is definitely a let down, but looks pretty from a distance i don't notice much of that. but it's a gen leap we are talking about here.
still a good performance for a game of this size

gamer78042578d ago

they rushed the game for the switch is why, it was developed for the wiiu then ported quickly over to the switch. I just got the wiiu version, nearly the same, both with frame dips.

BLKxSEPTEMBER2579d ago

Worse downgrade I've seen this year is Ghost Recon. I have it for X1 and it's almost unbearable to play. It literally looks like a PS3 game to me. It looks slightly better on Pro but it's still a very ugly game on consoles compared to what was shown.

Bathyj2579d ago

I think it looks great on Pro. Not sure what you were expecting. Have you played it on Pro or are you just saying that based on video and reviews?

I guess I didnt really follow this game and then when I loved the beta I got it. So big whoops for me for not have high expectations.

vickers5002579d ago

I played the beta on pro (though I don't know if betas have pro specific features) and while the models looked not that great, the textures and aliasing was very crisp and clear/clean. Very vivid too.

So in that respect, I thought it looked good. No blurriness compared to better looking games that use bluriness to mask games that focus on different aspects of graphical prowess. Not to say that one is better than the other, but it is a refreshing change every now and then.

R00bot2579d ago

We saw videos of how actual gameplay looked before release?

Phunkydiabetic12579d ago

You do realize a shitload of stuff can change over the YEARS a typical game is developed right?

Night992578d ago (Edited 2578d ago )

Dude you realise that graphics downgrade not always happen because developers don't show the actual gameplay? As long as the game is not finished you can always run into problems, some graphical aspects might work in certain areas and you think you are able to maintain it but later on you discover that it doesn't work with other areas. Especially with open world games you always can run into problems later on you were not aware at earlier stages of development. This is why trailers and showcases of games that are still in development always state somewehrer that the current presentation might not represent the full game.

joab7772578d ago

Yeah. I was happy to read this and then thought, it's easy to prioritize one thing when ya really don't have the tech to do the other.

rulparra2578d ago

We experiencing graphics downgrade on every console of this generation no matter if is exclusive or not.

shmowboyfebop2578d ago

Downgrades have been happening for a long time. Games journalists have only recently realized how mant hits they can get with those kinds of articles though. Does anyone else miss Colin Moriarty?

I really love the art style of BoTW. It has stunning looking vistas oozing with atmosphere

EddieNX 2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

In a world of boring, grey repetitive games, BOTW stands out like a Picasso. That's not to say something like Horizon doesn't look amazing, but, from an artistic perspective, BOTW stands alone like the Mona Lisa in a comparative point of view.

If you look at games like art, then BOTW beats everything!

Art >>> Tech

nX2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

EddieNX

When will you stop trash talking Horizon? What kind of mental issues do you have for downplaying the (clearly) most beautiful open world game yet?

http://nintendoeverything.c...
http://static.giga.de/wp-co...

Any sane person would disagree with you after seeing these screenshots. Zelda may look good at times but in Horizon, every single frame looks like a painting.

EddieNX 2579d ago

Ive not played Horizon yet, but I've played Zelda and I know its a Picasso moment in gaming.

bluefox7552579d ago

@EddieNX Lmao, Picasso? When you say things like that, you shouldn't be surprised when your have 1 upvote and 10 downvotes.

notachance2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@EddieNX I've played and finished both Horizon and Zelda, loved them both, and I can say the graphic on Horizon utterly defeated Zelda, the damn thing near making me cry when looking at it on 50" TV. It's uncanny, the world looks like it came straight out of a painting, very beautiful. In fact, if Horizon came out on PC it will certainly beat The Witcher 3 as the most beautiful game I've ever seen (due to the ultra textures and superior lighting).

Though Zelda really nailed that living world feeling though, I can't put fingers on it but the nature feels... real.

how about that for an unbiased opinion huh?
damn fanboy

-Foxtrot2579d ago

Eddie talks shit to people criticising Zelda BotW even if they don't say anything else, they just criticize the game BUT YET when he speaks about BotW he likes to bring up whatever game he can which is on another platform to play them down so Zelda reigns superior

Hypocrisy...you're the worst one here

light692578d ago

Lol you fucking idiots he wasn't even trash talking horizon he said "that's not to say something like horizon doesn't look amazing" but hurt Sony fanboys can't understand simple things

ccgr2579d ago

Agreed, it can't compete with PS4 or Xbone, but it's still pretty in its own right

Cybermario2579d ago

is not really a vs ps4 comparison, is how they showed something amazingly looking in E3 and they did a graphics downgrade a la Ubisoft. Yet there is terrible fps drops

Vegamyster2579d ago

Cybermario

There is differences but it's nothing like what Ubisoft does which the games look totally different, the 2014 footage was blurry since it wasn't a direct feed and the first true gameplay at the 2015 Game Awards looked worse than the final product, the game still looks great. *Spoiler alert* a few screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/bHdhd

fenome2579d ago

Yeah, it looks like it really paid off, it's a perfect art style for a Zelda game and everybody seems to love the gameplay. Props to them for really coming through for the fans on this one!

fenome2579d ago

There's a lot of haters and unnecessary comparisons in this thread. I'll be the first to admit that I'm very critical of Nintendo and their hardware choices but I'll also be the first to give credit where it's due to actual development teams. C'mon guys, these are the people that allow us to have these moments.

conanlifts2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

I find the graphics weird. At times i think its nothing special and then other times as the sun sets or rises, a lightning storm hits or i see the reflections in the rain i am suddenly wowed.

Pennywise1382579d ago

I kind of agree with that. I was really worried about the art style at first then after I played it I realized how unique it was. This is the most Japanese feeling Zelda yet but it work and still feels very Zelda.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2578d ago
ChristMustDie2579d ago

I'd much rather Nintendo focus on frame rate in the future rather than what the game looks like. Zelda runs at a stable frame rate (for the most part). I'd hate to see how it would run if the game looked better.

Alexious2579d ago

If it was on PC, it could have looked even better than the original trailer while running at constant 60+FPS on high-end hardware.

Maybe one day Nintendo will go multiplatform. Meanwhile, there's Cemu.

Homushi2579d ago

I'm really tired of PC gamer's same shit rhetoric about how [insert whatever game] would run better on PC at their "1080P 60fps" shit. Seriously, enough of that shit. It doesn't have to be at those settings have a quality game.

bluefox7552579d ago

It would be nice, right? If we could play Nintendo games on hardware that wasn't obsolete?

2579d ago
BrandanT2579d ago

Not everyone could afford a high end gaming PC, and not everyone has the time for that much dedication.

Istolla2579d ago

I wish Sony, Microsoft, and PC developers decided to only make games for the Switch, that way we can take our gave on the go.

In case you still don't get it, the world doesn't revolve around your narrow-minded views of what gaming should be.

The 10th Rider2579d ago

@BrandanT,

I disagree with Alexious and bluefox755, but you do realize you can get a decent gaming PC that will run most games in 1080p 60FPS for around $600? If you're willing to cut a few corners, you could shave off $100-200. A "High-end" gaming PC is really only needed right now if you're playing above 1080p.

mamotte2579d ago

But's not on PC, so cry me a river.

Prince_TFK2579d ago

Yeah but people tend to always forget that CEMU can only emulate the Wii U. Wow...shocking right? You pc elites can dream of emulating new nintendo games from now on, as the Wii U is dead.

Its gonna be years for a Switch emulator to emerge (if possible at all). Even the ps vita has no pc emulator yet, and the thing get pirated to oblivion.

AspiringProGenji2579d ago

Yeah but the game still suffers from massive drops. Just do a jump attack when fighting two tall demons, the game freezes for a second.

Festano2579d ago

Which makes that trailer even more of a lie. If it was Ubisoft or EA we'd be crucifying them, but it's Nintendo which always gets a free pass

R00bot2579d ago

The framerate issues are annoying but don't detract from the experience enough to warrant too much hate. The fact that we are even talking about the framerate right now means that Nintendo isn't getting a free pass.

HollowKnight2578d ago

False advertising, there I said It.

Sirk7x2578d ago (Edited 2578d ago )

I've put 90 hours into the game and can say I have only seen the game freeze like that once. When Witcher 3 first released the frame rate constantly dropped into single digits at places before patching. Still an amazing game regardless. Remember Mass Effect and Dark Souls 1 as well? Still regarded as amazing games.

corroios2579d ago

And you couldnt achieved that on a cel shaded game in 2017 after 4 years making it. Imagine the work if it wasnt cel shaded game to get 30 locked frames.

Neonridr2579d ago

you mean like Andromeda on the PS4 / Pro?

corroios2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Im still waiting for the Switch version and then you can compare a multiplattform game.

but you can read the «amazing» Dragon Quest Heroes 2 where the switch is closer to the vita performance....

Neonridr2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@corrois - still looks like the PS4 version in most regards though. I agree that the performance in that game is all over the place though (Dragon Quest Heroes 2).

I am merely saying that no hardware is free from performance dips. The Switch is considerably weaker than the PS4 / Pro. Yet both of those still exhibit frame drops too.. it happens. Just enjoy the game.

Wallstreet372579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

No like Horizon on og ps4 which (don't even need to mention pro :))graphically spanks this game or any game into oblivion. And is rock rock solid with a denser world's and more complex enemies all around and the world isn't a walking simulator half the time (and yeah I have switch and Zelda)

You try too hard dude it's not even funny lol might as well mention dark souls too that performs Ass all around.

Andromeda isn't even first party lol SMH but I see u had to go bottom of barrel to push your weak narrative :)

Neonridr2579d ago

@Wallstreet37 - I only mentioned Andromeda because it was brand new. Last Guardian ran like shit on the PS4 / Pro and that was a PS3 game.. better?

remixx1162579d ago

@neo

Why did you tell wallstreet to give you a break then bring up the last guardian?

He was right, if they had tried to push realistic graphics then the game definitely wouldn't have been what it is now.

I'm fact your both right. It is an art style choice but it was one they chose that also benefitted their vision for the game and limitations of the hardware.

The last guardian surely wasn't limited by the ps4, that games issues came else where while still being pretty and fun.

Darkfist_Flames2579d ago

The Last Guardian runs better on ps4 pro.

Wallstreet372579d ago

Nintendo relys heavily on that aesthetic due to its under powered hardware. More realistic graphics wouldn't even happen with Zelda on switch. Remember that more realistic Zelda tech demo years ago? There's a reason it didn't make it into a game.

Neonridr2579d ago

it's called an art style. I bet you were all over The Last Guardian though right? Give me a break.

Wallstreet372579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

I see reading comprehension and rational evades you. Who cares if it's called art style lol we all know it's art style genius, it still doesn't change the fact that Nintendo relies heavily (disproportionate amount of games) on cute "art style" with most of their games because of their hardwareeeeee deficiencies. That "art style" allows them to do things in the game or have the game period on their system as opposed to a more realistic and hardware taxing game

Let me guess? You still believe Nintendo does this with like 90% of their games because it resonates with the younger crowd and demographics their aiming for lol sureeeee. SMH some of you guys man.

Neonridr2579d ago

@Wallstreet - I do not discount that the choice in graphics help with being able to push more as the system definitely has its own weaknesses. But that hardly means that a game is less fun. Gravity Rush was a fantastic game, yet hardly a taxing one.

The Order 1886 was a gorgeous game, yet how did all that turn out? Means jack crap if the game is garbage.

Good for the PS4 for being able to push more, if it couldn't we would all laugh at it. I own a Pro, so I know what the system can do connected to my LG OLED 4K. I haven't played my copy of Horizon yet (still playing Zelda at the moment) but I know it will look gorgeous on that TV with HDR.

Wallstreet372579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Fair enough (even though I happened to like The Order minus crap boss battles). And that's all some of us are trying to say (that the hardware is holding games back).

Again I have a switch feel free to pm and I'll add you.

Imalwaysright2579d ago

Nintendo never went for realistic graphics in most of their games. This is true now that their consoles are weaker and was true when the N64 and GC were more powerful than the PS1 and PS2.

yeahokwhatever2579d ago

What about Little Big Planet? The graphics are really good, but its got a cute style. Why cant Nintendo do both too? Ratchet and Clank can on the PS4. Why can't Zelda look cute AND modern?

rainslacker2579d ago

Cell shaded isn't inherently easier on the rendering engine or GPU. Cell shaded is just an effect of the textures used, which take up the same space and rendering time regardless of how they look. Rendering time is more affected by object size(number of vertices), effects, and lighting used. There is no reason why many of these things need to be downgraded for cell shaded, although these things aren't as robust on the Switch. On the other hand, Cell shading also requires different filters to process the look, so in some cases it's actually a wash.

How long until they get sued and it gets taken down? I say a month or 2

PRIMORDUS1d 5h ago

Sued for what? It's just an emulator no ROMs are with it. ROMs are easy to get anyway, but with iPhone you can't just copy and paste like Android unless it's jail broken I think. Anyway Nintendo should be more concerned with their ROMs up to torrent for years for all of their concoles, but then again they can't do nothing about it, they never will and I love it. 🤣

Won't belong before Nintendo bangs on Apple's door to have the emu removed. Like I say you take down one six more take it's place. Problem is people are putting emu's on such stupid platforms. The good emus are the ones not on stupid platforms like a red target. The good emu's are word of mouth and keep a low profile.
