ESPN tells pro gamer to change Street Fighter character’s costume to meet “broadcast standards”

The bodysuit Cammy has been wearing for 24 years apparently doesn’t comply with the network’s standards and practices.

I mean I get where both sides are coming from. They are literally liable per the FCC and are responsible for any complaints they receive. Having to deal with those very real facts mean they have to set guidelines to protect themselves.

zeal0us2461d ago

ESPN is the same network that airs female volleyball. Where the players are wearing outfits far more revealing.

Krysis2461d ago

Yeah except the woman beach volleyball and tennis players can wear the skimpiest uniforms available, but a room woman has to be dressed appropriately.

Eonjay2461d ago

On a completely different note. Can we all admit that some of those Volleyball outfits don't look good on them because some of them are way too skinny? I mean, I am skinny myself but damn there is a point where skinny isnt cute...

bluefox7552461d ago (Edited 2461d ago )

ESPN is cable, and therefore not bound to the FCC rules. Only broadcast television is.

fr0sty2461d ago

I doubt it's ESPN that cares, it's more likely the FCC.

DragonKnight2460d ago

So Cammy's suit is a no go but Laura's cleavage and underboob is perfectly fine?

morganfell2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

ESPN doesn't receive FCC complaints. The FCC receives FCC complaints. ESPN would receive notifications of violations. Then it is an actual violation, not a complaint. The bodysuit doesn't violate the FCC regulations. Why? Because the FCC has no real authority over the cable channels. The FCC can posture if it wishes, but they are toothless. Draconian organizations that threaten advertisers over archaic indecency laws are the enemy of free speech on cable.

This is an ESPN moment of idiocy, nothing more.

I'm not sure what's worse...SJW's or people who blame literally everything on them.

This is ESPN not wanting to deal with FCC garbage. TV censorship is as old as TV.

bluefox7552461d ago (Edited 2461d ago )

@frostypants ESPN is not bound by FCC regulations, they are a cable network. But even if they were, Cammy's body suit isn't even racy, it's equivalent to what a gymnast would wear. This has absolutely nothing to do with the FCC.

BenjaMan642460d ago

I doubt so. Censorship of anything considered "too sexy" has existed for decades, if not centuries, long before modern progressive movements were created.

itBourne2461d ago

Being someone who grew up playing sports year round and watching ESPN my entire life... I am done with it... I no longer will watch or listen or even acknowledge ESPN as a sports channel... Its beyond bad... Between all the firings of actual sports journalists and the constant shoving of extreme left wing politics down your throat DURING sports discussion... its way to much. If only they actually talked still talked about sports. ESPN, the world wide leader in left wing politics...

vallencer2461d ago

Well Disney does own them sooooooo.....it doesn't surprise me that this was an issue.

frostypants2461d ago (Edited 2461d ago )

Blame the FCC.

bluefox7552461d ago

The FCC does not regulate cable television.

bluefox7552461d ago (Edited 2461d ago )

@ziggurcat No. You are wrong. Read the third paragraph. I'll even copy and paste it for you:
"In that world, cable programmers can say and display just about anything they want and not run afoul of the Federal Communications Commission’s indecency standards, because the F.C.C. does not regulate cable television."

Do they think Cammy is a real person? wtf...

KwietStorm_BLM2461d ago

No, but they definitely overlooked women's volleyball, gymnastics, and their own naked issue of ESPN magazine.

segamaniaco2461d ago

What about men almost naked at swimming?

_-EDMIX-_2461d ago

They have sponsors to think about.

I'm pretty sure they let them know this ahead of time. I don't really see much wrong with it, if esports wants that viewership, they also need to fit with what those sponsors want.

Eonjay2461d ago

Right. And lawyers and the government and Disney. Money is real and most of us are mature enough to understand these concepts. Asking them to accept all that liability is stupid and harsh and only the most uneducated spout bogus statements without considering remedies first. For me, I like the costumes and want them to stay but understand that its the system as a whole and not ESPN that we should be attacking.

Krysis2461d ago

What do those sponsors think about teen girls parading about in skin tight gymnastics uniforms that show everything, or beach volleyball players in nothing more than skimpy bikinis or tennis players in their short skirt uniforms that are always flying up or there annual half nude swimsuit magazines. No I don't understand and this is a joke.

_-EDMIX-_2461d ago

@Eonjay- "its the system as a whole and not ESPN that we should be attacking"

They support it nonetheless

They are clearly ok with their sponsors orders on what they are ok and not ok with.

@Krysis- "What do those sponsors think about teen girls parading about in skin tight gymnastics uniforms that show everything, or beach volleyball players"

Thats nice.

I don't make the rules lol Ask them. They have their standards of what they are and aren't ok with. ESPN likely already knows the list of things their sponsors are not ok with.

DragonKnight2460d ago

Again... Laura Matsuda

Cleavage. Underboob. Perfectly fine.

mamotte2461d ago

OK, OK, first of all, I'm not defending ESPN or attacking anything or.. whatever. And yes, I find that what they're doing is kinda stupid, but, mej. Point is, I'm a graphic designer. In cases like this, it's not about the ass is from a real person or not. Usually we sell IDEAS, for example, hentai is still considered porn, even it it's just drawings and not a real person. And that's why they say the imagination is the best aphrodisiac. This said, an ass is an ass, I suppose, and people will still fap to it. The awesome power of the human brain...

Here' I'll give some boobs (.)(.) Maybe you'll want'em bigger ( . )( . )

ESPN is a left wing hack network now. Completely worthless when it comes to sports.

opinionated2461d ago

I use the firestick. I don't need the commie-tary, I just need the games.

PurpHerbison2459d ago

If ESPN is a left wing hack network. What is FS1?

Kabaneri2461d ago

Yeah politics have no place in sports. Just ask Colin Kaepernick.

opinionated2461d ago

ESPN was all about it. He was held up as a hero. He didn't stand up during a pledge, WHO CARES lol. Wow so brave, such a symbol of heroism lol. The US is such a terrible country that a no-talent hack can make a million dollars doing absolutely nothing.

He personifies espn and their modern priorities. I don't want to hear some sports announcer talk about healthcare and gun control like they have any clue of what they're talking about lol. They are awful and should be ashamed of themselves. Gaming should get out while they have a chance.

2pacalypsenow2461d ago

He shouldn't have opted out of his contract then.

Pantz2461d ago

As an SJW myself, who doesn't see gender, I feel Cammy's ass is really really nice and should not be censored.

contradictory2461d ago

self proclaimed SJW who doesn't want to censor T&A..?
is this real life? you have my sword

Cy2461d ago

ESPN is garbage. I'm so glad it's dying.

Street Fighter 5: Analysing a Tarnished Legacy

Street Fighter 5 launched in 2016, and is widely considered a misstep for the hugely popular franchise. This article explains why that is.

Terry_B111d ago

Every Street Fighter is called a misstep of the series since Street Fighter III..and even the Alpha games were not liked by everyone.

SF V had a miserable start but later it did a lot things actually better than SFIV and SF6.

SF6 is the first SF since SFII Turbo for that I did not buy at launch. And today, around 6 months after its launch I still have no motivation to buy it.

kevco33110d ago

I've had every Street Fighter on launch since SFII on the SNES. SFV is definitely my least played of them all.

SF6 is very good. You should give it a second look.

Terry_B110d ago

Maybe in 2-3 years when there is a version that has characters I care for.

So far there is not one of the new characters I like..and my favourite 4 are not a part of it either. (Bison, Balrog, Sagat and Vega) + the whole hip hop style and the crappy music turned me totally off.

Looking forward a lot to Tekken 8.

Sano24110d ago

SF4 vanilla was loved by most and and not considered a misstep. It wasn't until they went revision crazy that people started turning on Capcom.

Terry_B110d ago

Don't remember the criticques it got for the big hands and feet, the sometimes weird looking faces, the lame boss (Seth) and that so many characters were shotos and yup..the many new versions. Just every SF got its haters no matter how good it was.

Nerdmaster110d ago

It was criticized for the first trailers having an interesting art style with those ink splashes, but the real game had none of that and people felt cheated. And Capcom decided to add some of those effects in the game later because of the backlash. But I don't remember any other big complaints about it.

EvertonFC110d ago

I grew out of fighting games, loved them as a kid but online you just get your ass kicked over and over leaving just the bare bones single player and also having no friends anymore who like fighting games either just makes me not want to buy or play them anymore.

CrimsonWing69110d ago

I dunno, I like Street Fighter 5 quite a bit. 🤷‍♂️

Shiro173109d ago

Sf6 is the best sf since sf4ae lol
