No not really, it's pretty sad really. Was looking forward to this.

hiredhelp2253d ago

Np rain looks like theres still hope.

I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers.

I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.

Agreed

I really hope some publisher or developer steps forward and give some assistance.

XiNatsuDragnel2253d ago

Very sad * you mean there I corrected you.

Typical.. successful kickstarter project gets stars in their eyes and try to do more than they originally intended. The only losers are the backers. The devs spent none of their own money, and can walk away from the whole thing without much consequence. At least they're not asking for more money to keep the project going.

Neonridr2252d ago

the sad thing was they had a great prototype of the game up and running in Unity. It looked awesome, there was a good demo to whet our appetite. Then for some reason they decided to switch engines to Unreal. The game became bland and uninspiring and turned into something that none of the backers wanted. Us backers even expressed our displeasure with the change, and the devs did nothing to really address that. They decided to make their own game when everyone originally just wanted an updated System Shock with prettier graphics.

dadavis19922252d ago

Uhh I really don't think switching to Unreal Engine had anything to do with the game becoming 'more bland'. UE4 and Unity are both powerful, versatile game engines. Using one or the other would not impact the design of a game in the hands of a capable developer.

Neonridr2251d ago

@dadavis1992 - well I am a kickstarter backer.. I am guessing you aren't?

They showed off a great looking prototype that was built in Unity. It had the same feel as the original with updated graphics. That is all any of us wanted, nobody wanted a re-imagining. We just wanted System Shock HD basically. The devs decided midway through development to shift gears and take on a brand new engine, which meant bringing on new people to work with it and to suddenly increase the scope of the project. The new demos they showed off looked polished, because Unreal is powerful, but it just didn't feel the same.

The backers voiced their concerns to the devs, but they didn't take heed. The new direction was not what any of us wanted, nor what we all backed.

Again, if you had followed along with the project you would have understood.

dadavis19922251d ago

@Neonridr

All totally valid points. I'm just saying it probably had less to do with switching to Unreal, and more to do with development/design decisions that were made.

Cobra9512252d ago

The really sad thing is that crowdfunding has been proven unreliable for game development. I used to have high hopes for it, especially as a way to circumvent the greedy big publishers. But it's clear now that, without accountability to backers with the legal muscle and know-how to enforce the agreements, it's all too easy for development to go astray into partial or total failure--if they were ever in earnest about their goals in the first place.

kevnb2252d ago

You’re right, traditionally funded games never get cancelled!

kevnb2252d ago

The same thing happens all the time with games backed by shareholders and publishers, and also many great games come out of Kickstarter. I don’t understand your logic.

A .300 hitter and a .015 hitter both get on base sometimes and strike out sometimes.

kevnb2251d ago

ya lets just pull numbers out of our backside to make a straw man argument.

FallenAngel19842252d ago

Just when I found out about the rerelease this week it gets put on hiatus

munchmiller2252d ago

The start of falling into development hell. This will not end well.

At least it turned out good in the end
