Sea of Thieves - Another Microsoft Blunder?

Enricko at Sirus Gaming: I know that there are a lot of people that are hyped for this game, but is it really going to be that good? Xbox One owners are pining for this game to salvage the system’s reputation and there’s a possibility it could do just that.

However, I don’t think that it’s going to be enough.

A good idea that is going to be dead in the water frankly.

NecrumOddBoy2256d ago (Edited 2256d ago )

Will they ship a lot of copies? How many sales? Will it make a boat load of money? I wonder if the PC version will get pirated? 🤣

Ahahahahaha great!

@necrumoddboy - you, sir, are a poet.

The Wood2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

We can't have it both ways.

The camp that I favour often bemoan ms's lack of courage and variety so there's no need for negativity. What ms needs is more ventures out of their comfort tri fector zone. Sot may not be my cup of tea but that doesn't mean it won't be enjoyable for others. . Ms needs this to do well. . It may end up being some kinda catalyst for bravery and spending resources on growing their own more often. .

TheCommentator2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

@ Necrum

Sea of Thieves is on the horizon now but it's still sink or swim for MS and, as always, there are hungry sharks in the water just waiting to tear this game apart. It's easy enough to dig up the info on this one though and it looks to me like MS has a rare treasure on their hands. Perhaps MS mapped this out in their long term strategy and are finally navigating out of rougher waters... because their compass is pointed in the right direction? Be on the lookout for when this game releases!

TheCommentator2255d ago

To the people who'd disagree with a little pirate humor...

You guys are really Kraken me up!

The Wood2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

Stop. . . . Just stop 🤣🤣

Pickledpepper2255d ago

Sorry to barge in but I think this could be a life line for them. Even if it not that great Ms will still stay a float. Ms seem to weather a lot of stormy criticism what ever they ship out.

I heard there was a lot of seamen involved in the production. What's with all the recent scuttle on this? Let's hope they're not drowning in debt over this. It would be unfathomable if another great looking game gets cancelled...

Sorry, I loved where you went and felt the urge to continue.

KickSpinFilter2255d ago

I just hope this game does great. With the #metoo movement going on now so strong is a game where your seamen really going to go over well? Kinda doubt it.

GottaBjimmyb2254d ago

Yea, some will like it, some won't (including myself) but the pressure and importance MS is putting on this game is well beyond it's actual value IMO.

trooper_2255d ago

Necrum, that's way too funny, lol.

DarXyde2255d ago

I guess we'll see a lot of piracy, if that's the case.

I expect those who play it will treasure it though

joab7772255d ago

Itll depend on progression and added content. If done right, it could be this grand ongoing adventure with treasure to hunt weekly, leaderboards and constant battles. But they need to invest in the experience or it will be a flag in the pan, relegated to parties for a few months.

Aenea2255d ago

Ehh, why? Shouldn't it release first to come to such outspoken conclusions?

Zeref2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

From what we've seen it's got a lot going for it. The closed beta where you were allowed to stream was the most watched game on both Twitch and Mixer. So it doesn't lack hype/interest at all.

IamTylerDurden12255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

I haven't played the beta but the E3 demo was unimpressive imo. I honestly would be surprised if SoT succeeds bc MMOs take time, patience, and a substantial investment from the dev/pub in order to be successful. MS isn't necessarily known for risk taking or willingness to lose money, but the fact that it's a $60 game might be enough revenue to support it until they can build the player base and implement their microtransactions.

IamTylerDurden12255d ago

I haven't been impressed with what i've seen, but Microsoft has done a terrific job in getting it out there and garnering excitement and hype. If you also consider the fact that ppl are starving for exclusives to test their new 6tf consoles it has a chance to sell better than i may have originally expected. I doubt the game will be a rich and polished experience on day one, but like most mmos if it stays alive long enough it has a chance to succeed. Time will tell.

UltraNova2255d ago

The animated/cartoony style is not xbox 1 X showcase material and it shouldn't be because fun gameplay is the true quality that gamers are looking for from MS.

rainslacker2255d ago

I think the game might do well enough. I don't see it becoming the next big thing though. Most accounts seem to say that it's a good enough game, so I'm sure the people that play it may end up liking it, and as such, it should be looked at on it's own merits, and not on if it's the next big secret sauce that will somehow save Xbox.

seanpitt232254d ago

This type of game is not what the xbox one needs.

ah... MS didn't make PUBG. Generic hate piece.

WilliamSheridan2255d ago

It's very much just another Sony fanboy hate article. He even goes on to say the game looks amazing! Having played the beta, it was way more fun than I thought it would be. Great game.

Will it turn things around for Xbox? One game won't do that by itself, but it's definitely a piece of the puzzle that will improve consumer views on the system. If Crackdown is good and something else hits this year, Xbox will have a solid year.

Either way I own both systems so I'm excited for individual games, I don't really care who wins or loses...

But man do I hate these articles.

@ letsa_go

I didn't say he had praise, I said he bashed the game, meanwhile admits it was fun. That's a true fanboy. He hates the game and Microsoft while silently saying it's actually a good game.

It's a total Microsoft hate piece, and I'm sick of it...

Zenbaby2254d ago

@WilliamSheridan Man, I'm not saying you're wrong. You do realize though that it is entirely possible to love and hate something right? Destiny for example, I played the shit out of it, had a lot of fun, but ultimately it wasn't what it was supposed to be. What was there was great, but it ended up being really shallow with content and never lived up to it's promise. I refuse to buy Destiny 2 because it wasn't what it should have been "and apparently Destiny 2 is worse in some ways". Could Sea of Thieves be super awesome? Yeah, it looks like a lot of fun, it really does. However the more gameplay I watch, the more I think this looks like it should either be free to play with the paid content "regardless if its cosmetic" they're going to have, or at least be a 40 dollar title. I just don't think this game looks like it's worth 60 bucks and paid content. Maybe full release will show me more and it'll be justified, I really don't know. At this point though I can firmly say I "Love and Hate" Sea of Thieves. Or maybe this whole post is worthless and you really are just upset because he didn't shout "I LOVE THIS MS GAME" at the top of his lungs? :)

WilliamSheridan2254d ago

@zenbaby
Having played the beta, it was surprisingly more fun than expected. I thought I'd like it for a minute, turned out I played it for hours and just kept wanting more.

ShottyatLaw2256d ago

Time will tell, but I've slowly been swayed to thinking the game will be much more successful than I first thought.

It's got the perfect formula for a persistent online title. It is highly accessible and family friendly. Thanks to Game Pass, the cost of entry plummeted to a budget-friendly level. It's in that Minecraft-Fortnite territory, and like those titles, it is a perfect fit for the Youtube, Twitch, and of course, Mixer crowds.

They might have a hit. It will not sway those outspoken people who may believe all games need to fit into the mature, cinematic SP genre. That's clearly not the audience. The millions buying, playing, and viewing other games in the same category is the target here. On paper, they've served up a winning formula.

Ironically, the first thing you hear from detractors like this author is: "I watched people play, and I think it's going to fail."

Kids watch Minecraft streams by the bucketloads with far less going on. If we gauge SoT's success by its streaming pressence thus far, it might be pretty big.

yomfweeee2255d ago

Minecraft is successful for many reasons including the freedom to do a lot of things and be creative.
Fortnite is riding high off of the battle royale and receiving constant updates.

We've seen no reason that SoT will be like either of those. There's not much you can do from what anyone as seen.

shadowraiden2255d ago

plenty to do and the co-op on twitch alone will sell the game by the bucket loads. all those who have played it have enjoyed it and most likely will be buying it.

also the beta's were a tiny fraction with a lot more shown in several trailers and dev talks that wasnt in the beta's

aconnellan2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

“There’s not much you can do from what’s what anyone has seen”

There never is in a beta

ShottyatLaw2255d ago

I disagree that "we" have seen no reason to think it will have similar success. Quite the contrary. Obviously there's something to do, otherwise we wouldn't literally "see" so many streams and vids already. That's kind of my point.

The recent discussions also point toward a game that will have a good content and progression path with end game content planned.

There is a lot to do in minecraft, but have you seen the videos getting millions of views? Most are just content creators messing around in the game world with the players. I could easily see SoT content of the same style. It's family friendly, low cost, with low pc spec requirements. That's a good formula that the Minecrafts and Fortnites have greatly benefitted from.

I initially thought this was going to be an MMO-lite with a short shelf life, but I'm starting to think it's got a shot at being something much bigger. We will see.

UnHoly_One2255d ago

This is one that I am totally not sure how to predict it will go.

The only thing I know for sure is that myself and a number of my friends have all pre-ordered it and will be playing on launch day.

The beta was the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time.

ShottyatLaw2255d ago (Edited 2255d ago )

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a smash hit, or a huge flop. It will be interesting to see.

I'll sub to Game Pass because of it, though. So, MS is going to probably consider that a win.

obidanshinobi2255d ago

Make a less click baiting headline next time, and people might read bwfore judging.

z2g4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

people don't understand nuance or abstract thought. they just hear two games and decide they like one better than the other so the one they don't like can't be anything close to the one they like. I get that you are speaking in a larger context, not a direct comparison. it could be a huge community building game that has a long burn that could also extend to other platforms and or be cross platform. it could be like sea of thieves in that regard etc. never mind the knuckle draggers on this site. its impossible to have a reasonable, objective conversation here.

Sea of Thieves Welcomes 40 Million Players

Joe 'Three Sheets' Neate (Executive Producer): "As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves!"

Crows907d ago (Edited 7d ago )

40 million have set sail...that's great. How many are sailing now? Monthly active users....when it actually matters. How many people purchased the game is another important number.

Gamingsince19817d ago

You don't get numbers like that from MS mouth pieces, they just like to say stuff like "this game was looked at 129 million time, the biggest amount of people browsing a game of this genre on xbox gamepass ever in the last 3 weeks compared to before gamepass was out (small print only 2 million bothered playing longer than 20 seconds and only 100 people are playing it concurrently)

It's all smoke and mirrors

nibblo7d ago

There are usually around 10,000 concurrent users on Steam not counting Xbox or PS but really it doesn't matter as long as there are enough people on the servers to play which there always were and will be for a long time now with the PS players coming on board. Same goes for how many people bought it and how many are on GP, we aren't the accountants of these console companies so why would we care?

Hofstaderman7d ago

Reporting on MAU stats is very misleading. Other companies publish units sold, MS cannot or will not due to Game Pass. We all know that their prior startegies have not panned out so now they have to actually sell games on other consoles. In any case, SoT is doing impressive preorders on PS5 and will very likely motivate Satya to release more games other than the four indicated games on their competitor's consoles. Take note Phil is radio silent....

Jingsing6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Yeah Microsoft would tell you the start menu has had 1 billions clicks on Windows 11 to let you know it is beating Windows 10 when the reality is something else. 10,000 concurrent steam users is enough for me to extrapolate there aren't millions playing this on console either. Lets not forget the motivation to bring this to PS5 is already an admission of poor player count. I'd prefer it is Microsoft would just say nothing when it comes to numbers as it makes them look stupid while trying to make everyone else look like an idiot.

Abear217d ago

40 Mil across Stream, Windows 10, and Xbox. Healthy numbers for sure, but when PC is the biggest platform, I expected more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does on PlayStation. Very well could be double that player count in 6 months with PS too. It’s crazy for developers to skip the most popular platform, not sure why they’d want to, but they must have had their rea$ons.

Christopher6d ago

PC is the market with the most competition for these type of games as well, so it's actually easier to break in on consoles where these games aren't as prominent.
