i'm glad for him, glad his vision turned out to be the best thing to happen to GOW since GOW

Skull5212075d ago

Except that God of War no longer feels like God of War.

"One team member even said he was ruining the franchise"

I'm not saying that they've ruined the franchise, but I get where this team member was coming from. The game kinda kept is aesthetics but lost its unique identity in the process. I'm only a few hours in but I don't feel like I'm playing God of War anymore, the combat system is just completely different from what it used to be.

SCW19822075d ago

I thought that at the beginning of the game but the more you play it the more you realize it actually kept quite a bit of the god of war DNA. Keep with it and you will see.

Eonjay2075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

The more you play the .ore you realize its essentially the same with far greater control. No one who actually plays the game would say it's been ruined.

Dark_Knightmare22075d ago

It’s easily a gow game and the more you play the stronger that feeling gets

mt2075d ago

I was like why the change in gameplay when I first saw the game in E3. then after playing the game I was if you gotta change the gameplay mechanics with something equal or better then I am fine with it.

Kyizen2075d ago

After you get *spoiler* you have that GOW feeling

UNCHARTED2FANATIC2075d ago

The combat still feels like God of war just a bit different. Although the identity of God of war has been changed a lot. From being Action packed and fast to being slow paced,, and the bosses overall except for the baldur fight dont compare to the previous games. Even the story left more to be desired personally

jimbost792075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

@skull. Do you just go to articles and downplay everything? Every article about a sony exclusive and there you are saying how shit it is. Why dont you go to articles about games you like and be positive? You are toxic and the worst memer of community by far, you just type absolute drivel.
You're only a few hours in, well ive platinuled every gow and i can assure you it feels exactly like gow should. Especially when you get the blades. You can even remap the controls to calssic so the blades feel exactly the same. It would be like saying mario 64 didn't feel like mario. It did , it just evolved the formula. If you don't like it fair enough Thats your opinion. But in my opinion its exactly what the series needed and every aspect of the game, minus the puzzles blew me away. My game of the gen.

AspiringProGenji2075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

it is still God of War regardless of no fixed csmers angles, which is the only thing you might miss in this new game. Every thing else stills feels like it. Sants Monica even brough the blade of chaos back yet some people still want to say that.

I’m glad Cory decided to take the series to a new direction gameplay wise, otherwise I would not have enjoyed it as much. The greek era is done. Time for something new. I wish even more stablished games did this

jimbost792075d ago

Can you block people on here, so their comments dont show? If you can, would someone be kind enough to tell me how?

victorMaje2075d ago

Keep at it, before you know it you’ll get that feeling back, you’ll see.

doggo842075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

"except God of war doesn't even feel like God of war"

Xbox fanboy downplay starter kit. What are you going to say when GOW sweeps GOTY left right and centre? Can't wait to see your damage control.

Also, how hilarious that you try and use this quote "One team member even said he was ruining the franchise" to suggest it has lost its character - LMAO, bruh, you realise they are talking about early development stages over here, and they are saying all this in the wake of its success?

Quickly go onto metacritic and refresh your memory on its critical reception. Also, if it doesn't "feel" like Gow can you give me an explanation as to why it's the fastest selling PS exclusives in history?

""One team member even said he was ruining the franchise" "

Skull 521

Its obvious people will have problem when you reboot a beloved franchise but then after a lot of Nos and disagreement. Everyone understood Cory's vision and now its the best selling game on PS and one of the best games out there.. The combat this time changed and IF only you are not lying and have played the game you will understand why..

chris2352075d ago

quite obviously you didn‘t play the game to the end

Ratchet752075d ago

Like u ever owned a PS4...
U re on every PlayStation articles.
U re just A sad little Troll .

InTheLab2074d ago

Once you get to a certain point in the game you will say "holy crap, this IS GoW!!"
I would be shocked if everyone didnt feel like this early on. For me, I spent maybe 20 hours or so toiling around without advancing the story I'm not sure that is the way to go. Push through the story and you have that "ohhhh " moment.

Jinger2074d ago

It will never feel the same with the new camera angle. It just never does. Also the lack of big combos never gets better since most of the cool moves are tied to a cool down timer. The bosses also are probably the weakest bosses since the very first game.

All that said though, it is still a really great game... just don't expect it to ever feel fully GoW.

lipton1012074d ago

Cry me a river. Your contrarian “too cool for GoW” opinion doesn’t matter

AmUnRa2074d ago

And here is mister negative to all what Sony does.
That you dont like the game is not strange. For me, and the most of GoW players loved what Cory and his team did with GoW.
And when you see how many copies are sold gamers disagree with you. I can say that that is your prejudiced point of view.
You only have to read your comment history and you can not deny that you have an agenda.

2074d ago
Goldby2074d ago

@jinger.

Im guessing you are just randomly tapping r1 and r2. There are some sweet combos you can do in the game, just have to learn them and use them

Vizigoth042074d ago

You're absolutely right. The gameplay is different. The theme is different. Everything is different now. Kratos told you not to dwell on it yet here you are. 😋. I think his team made lacked vision at the time and probably has a lot more of it now.

Jinger2074d ago

@aspiringProGenji

That is cute and all, but that is nothing compared to the old games.

@Goldby

of course I was doing the combos, I couldn't have beat it on Give Me God of War without becoming proficient at the combat system.

I know you guys like boost up this game like the combat system is amazing, but here is a refresher of how bad ass the old games are in comparison. https://youtu.be/DjTG5LpaG3...

WeedyOne2074d ago

I have loved and played EVERY God of War game to the end EXCEPT the recent reboot. I bought it on release played about half way through the game and just got bored. Still have yet to complete the game because it feels less like god of war and more like other games in the genre (tomb raider, uncharted but with melee weapons). Not much of a variety in the enemies you face, MUCH less blood.

Also no tits, not 1 single tit in the whole game... lol (this is a bit of sarcasm...) but seriously where are the tits?

TheKingKratos2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

@Jinger

Soo what i get from your comment that you weren't very good at the game because i was doing combo left and right plus all the cool move with runes and i got the plat and finished it on GMGOW
As a fan of old games the new one is far better

AspiringProGenji2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

The old games were fast but there was no depth. Ascencion was the one with most depth yet fans were supposedly tired of the formula.

This game now has depth and the combos are still there. If you still prefer the old because the combos were easier and it was more button mashing then sure, that’s fine. But the series is much better in the direction is going with added depth and RPG elements in its combat. The fast pace and juggles are still there, but now you have to actually keep it up not just button mash, and I already showed you a video of how fast you can go with it

Your video is not bad either but mine proves the combos and the fast paced action are still there

TheKingKratos2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

AspiringProGenji

Yeah when God of War: Ascension ( i was one of the few who played it) came out i was pretty much done with GOW i was so sick of the same combat over and over and over and how repetitive it become

Thank god for the new one
One of the very few developers who dared to change things up in their games series

trooper_2074d ago

You're on a roll, aren't you?

On every Playstation related article, projecting your 'fake' concern.

Doesn't it get old?

How is 'God of War' not 'God of War'?

NateBOY2074d ago

@doggo84
gow may not be goty, I read the metacritic reviews, most critics gave 10 why this is the best gow, not because it's perfect, it even split reviews of the critics as best ps4 game with bloodborne,

gangsta_red2074d ago

@Skull

"The game kinda kept is aesthetics but lost its unique identity in the process."

I'm actually glad they switched it up as they did, I thought by part three of GoW the formula was getting stale and old. GoW needed something different to set it apart from the original trilogy.

I like the more semi open design of this game and the combat even though not as fast paced and arcade like of the past games is still fun.

My only real complaint would be the small amount of content/enemies/boss fights in the game.

But definitely keep playing, it's a really good game.

madforaday2074d ago

The good part is that the combat is system is one of the best in any modern day game! You can easily hack yourself to the next part in the old GOW (on easy to normal game mode). This GOW actually makes the combat worth learning and experimenting. I know they are going to keep add to that in future installments!

Lionsguard2074d ago

I felt the same way because your attacks are so limited at the start. There is a point though where you will change your mind.

Master of Unlocking2073d ago (Edited 2073d ago )

There were plenty of gamers, including me, who are also genuine God of War fans, who weren't exactly willing to delve into a 7th outing like all the previous games. Franchise fatigue is the biggest worry any game and its developpers can have. Now God of War is set for the 5 next or so games as it is now, then a time will come to rejuvenate it again probably at some point in the future. But for now what they've done with it is a big breath of fresh air like we very seldom see in this industry.

It's interesting though, I never would've thought Shuhei Yoshida was that committed to the development of the game. Looks like the guy didn't steal his place at Sony Interactive Entertainment!

Ranks as one of the best crafted games of all time in my book. It does everything extremely well from combat to story to graphics to music to enemy design to EVERYTHING.

kevnb2075d ago

I think its pretty rough actually, but its fun and the non interactive bits are very well done. For many gamers story is the most important part, and they dont mind being a spectator so this game made them happy.

Dark_Knightmare22075d ago

Lol please explain what makes it rough

LucasRuinedChildhood2075d ago

Oh look, a Nintendo fanboy regurgitating a cheap talking point. This is the same crap that we've seen since the Wii - Nintendo fanboys (not fans) take a game's strength (be it graphics, story, scale, etc) and paint it as invalidating or being extremely detrimental to its gameplay. All of this because they simply can't handle a game on an opposing platform getting praise.

How is God Of War a game about being a spectator? That's not remotely true. Who do you think you're fooling? The love of this game is directed as much at the gameplay as it is the story. GOW's gameplay is phenomenal. You could play God Of War for an hour or more and not get a cutscene (especially if you focus on side missions).

xX-oldboy-Xx2075d ago

I've heard it called a few things, but rough? I'll only need 1 example to be satisfied. It's a masterpiece in game development.

doggo842075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

It's as rough as one smooth continuous shot. Really, you fanboys make yourselves look stupid trying to downplay GOW.

lipton1012074d ago

Lol troll. How about this: Make. Something. Better.

Or just continue to live your life as a small, contrarian voice on the Internet. A life devoid of meaning. A person who will not be remembered.

kevnb2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

Sure here are some.
1. Invisible walls in 2018
2. When starting an animation Kratos often gets caught on an invisible wall but he keeps running and then stomps.
3.Camera is pretty bad at times, you notice it when more enemies are on screen
4. some enemies are poorly designed and are just annoying to fight (trolls).

And yes it does make you sit on your hands a lot, many games tried to move away from this over a decade ago but here it is again. I don't want to ever not be in control of a game I'm playing, millions feel the same way.
I would still give a 9/10, but I know the next one will be much better. They did many things well and overall its a great game, but it has flaws that I find hard to overlook. And like i said before, if story is your main want in a game add a point.

madforaday2074d ago

@Kevnb

Most of your concerns are personal based. Invisible walls... come on, who cares, I get it, but that doesn't take me away from the experience. You are trying to find something wrong. I never had a problem with the camera, you just need to be aware if there are a lot of enemies around. There SHOULD be annoying enemies that you fight, not all enemies should be a walk in the park.

+ Show (6) more repliesLast reply 2074d ago
NateBOY2075d ago

I agree, but the next one will be better.
has more epic bosses and better battles against other types of enemies, plus more weapons

ClayRules20122075d ago

And to think, the end result is simply a masterpiece, no surprise there.

While there are certain aspects of the prototype gameplay I wish couldn’t stayed into the finished game (certain animations etc..)the end result is the complete package. Great story told with fantastic voice overs/performances/one shot camera. Fluid, fast, and brutal combat, and music that just hits so strong at the right moments.

kevnb2075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

its still kind of rough in many ways, but its fun, looks nice and people who like video game stories are drawn in. I mean for example when you get the prompt to press in the analog stick the animations can be downright wacky if close to a wall. I still liked it quite a bit, but it felt like a ps2 game with shiny graphics. I also don't get why we still have pretty much all story elements presented in a non interactive way, for me it really takes me out of the experience. But I still bought it and liked it, it was fun even if I started to want to skip much of the cut scenes after a while.

kevnb2075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

Of course Im getting disagrees, but its the truth. The game feels very limited imo, but it uses its smaller scope and invisible walls to look as detailed as possible and tell its story. If you are really into story elements, don't care if you have to just watch much of the story, and you dont mind limited interactivity and slightly clunky combat, you will love this. It really nails certain elements in a way that story driven fans will love. It kind of reminds me of uncharted, where you have these gears of war type parts (replaced with a slightly dark souls like combat) in fairly small areas combined with annoying climbing (similar to god of wars boat traveling) and overly simple puzzles, but the star of the game in both cases is mostly the parts where you dont play. This is why I say this god of war game feels like a naughty dog game, they have basically the same gameplay loop.

Dark_Knightmare22075d ago

It’s combat is nowhere near clunky which is why reviews said it was one of the best combat systems in years

Nitrowolf22075d ago

I thought they pulled it off amazingly with the change, but I can understand what you are saying.

****spoilers***

The one part of the game where I felt it was “limited” had to be the dragon fight, because the fight itself felt it needed to revolve around Kratos movements versus the other way around, like in past god of war games where Kratos needed to adapt to the constant changes in a large scale battle (like in the opening of god of war 3)

Despite being excited for this fight I thought it was by far the weakest in the game.

gobluesamg2075d ago

How is your opinion the truth? You are obviously in the extreme minority with your opinions that it is rough and that cutscenes hamper your immersion and experience. Use some critical thinking and ask yourself why are so many disagreeing with me?

ClayRules20122075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

“but the star of th game in both cases is mostly the parts where you dont play” I respectfully disagree completely.

As wonderful as the “none playing” sections are in the game (one shot camera cutscenes) the combat is brutal, fast, and fluid. I don’t see how you’d find that clunky or just the general gameplay clunky at all. Combat was praised in the reviews.

Also, I kindly suggest you (if you still have a PS2 anywhere) pop a game in & play, than go back to God of War on PS4. I think you’ll see a real difference.

cyclindk2075d ago

If you like "reviews" without any supporting/contrasting examples where individuals attempt, unsuccessfully, to present unfounded and statistically flimsy talking points as "evidence," you'll really enjoy these pieces (of garbage) written by kevnb. If you don't mind limited intelligence and slightly (extremely) lazy trolling, you will love this! It really nails certain elements in a way...

Need I go on?

doggo842075d ago

Just stop trying, you're failing miserably

kevnb2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

Oh really, anytime people praise the game they talk about the graphics and story first and foremost. I dont really care what the reviews said, the game is quite rough around the edges. I mean how can you call kratos running for a few seconds stopped by an invisible wall and then stomping not clunky? Hell the fact that they have invisible walls at all feels clunky to me. Mind you I still liked the game, people are acting like I said it sucked lol. Its a strong 9/10 game, but add a point if story is what you play games for.

kevnb2074d ago

@gobluesamg because I'm on N4G, a large percentage of gamers here care about story over everything else. The community here also hates MGSV and Breath of the Wild for example, even though they are fantastic games.

TheKingKratos2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

kevnb

"Oh really, anytime people praise the game they talk about the graphics and story first and foremost."

Just stop lying it's too much now
I have been to alot of sites and forums and never seen any one praise the story/graphics and not the brutal, intense gameplay...pretty much it combat system is loved by everyone
No review or gamer did that praise the story or graphics alone
And you give it 9/10 which means you loved it and that's great but just stop with the BS
And get out of N4G more

kevnb2074d ago

@TheKingKratos give me a break. I didn't say it wasnt fun or it was bad game, just that its a little rough and limited. Im sure the sequel will be a near perfect game.

TheKingKratos2074d ago

Dude i don't care about your opinion on the game being fun or not and as i said already you loved the game or else you wouldn't give 9/10

I only commented on the part where you said the game is getting praise because graphics and story which is a big fat lie and you know it.

trooper_2074d ago

No one agrees with you.

Why is it so hard to give credit where its due?

gangsta_red2074d ago

The only part about the combat with the over the shoulder view that got annoying was roll dodging out the way of an attack and into a wall or pillar that you couldn't see because of that camera angle.

Especially when trying to fight enemies that were a few levels above you but easy enough to get their patterns down to defeat them.

"It really nails certain elements in a way that story driven fans will love."

Agreed, i like how they didn't break for load screens, but instead hid them behind cut scenes or when you shimmy through rocks automatically to another section of the map. The immersion was never broken throughout the game because of this.

kevnb2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

"I only commented on the part where you said the game is getting praise because graphics and story which is a big fat lie and you know it."
Its not? Those are honestly the first things everyone praises about this game. The presentation and story is what makes this game special. Even in pretty much every review, they talk more about the characters, story etc than anything else. If they took away the story elements the game play alone wouldn't get it this reception, people wouldnt give it a pass for things like invisible walls and the troll fights.

TheKingKratos2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

kevnb
*Those are honestly the first things everyone praises about this game. The presentation and story is what makes this game special*

And again that's not true at all
Not a single review or forum i have been to praised the story and graphics only
I have no idea where are you getting this from ?
Also WTF ?? You want to take away the story and graphics out of them game just to suit your agenda ?
The game offer everything from gameplay to story to music everything goes hand to hand with each other

Keep your opinion to yourself and don't speak on behalf of everyone when you have nothing to back you up

kevnb2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

@TheKingKratos now you are twisting my words and adding straw man arguments, not worth my time. Im perfectly entitled to have my own opinion you bigot, nothing I said is not true and you are trying to put words in my mouth to suit your view. You remind me of a far left winger trying to shut everybody up who doesnt 100% agree with you. My opinion may not be popular here but screw you for telling me I cant have one and trying to change what I said.
"Also WTF ?? You want to take away the story and graphics out of them game just to suit your agenda ? "
are you stupid? I said if they took away the story elements the game wouldn't get the praise its getting, many other games have barely any story and are considered classics. And I never said to take the graphics out of the game, what would a game be without any graphics?

TheKingKratos2074d ago

Hmmm, insults when you have nothing to back you up!!
