It's sad, but not surprising. The reality is they where taking on too much and the quality was dropping on all their games. On top of that, all of their games ran terrible. They where so eager to pump out content that they didnt fix their core issues. This made people move away from them. What they originally did with The Walking Dead was moving and powerful. Then they rushed to released sub par content. Had they just kept to a few titles while constantly increasing the quality of their products they would still be successful.

CaptainOmega2041d ago

They ran all of their games on the same engine..an overhaul was needed.

crazyCoconuts2042d ago

Hope they profited for the good games they did put out. Also hope there's a good market for talented game developers and artists out there

XbladeTeddy2042d ago

Considering the video game industry is bigger than the movie and music business I don't think that's a problem.

sander97022042d ago

It's sad but I expected it after the whole mess with the leadership, bad sales and none of the other games matching the quality of TWD S1/TWAU it was bound to happen. I can remember something from every episode of TWD S1/TWAU but I can barely remember anything other than the ending for the other games.

-Foxtrot2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

Awful stuff. If only they made something original and tried to survive within something built up from scratch while trying to evolve the genre. 10 years of the exact same stuff...I mean if you don't evolve and stand still then unfortunately these things will happen.

ArchangelMike2042d ago

Yup, they got comfortable with a one-trick-pony, and that bubble burst. They should have diversified their portfolio sooner.

StormSnooper2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

Perhaps but they were offering something that others were not. I think they kept thinking that the next concept will sell more than it actually managed. So they kept at it. There was nothing bad about their games imo

Jinger2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

@storm

Besides their God awful engine that couldn't even hold a steady 30fps for a barely interactive movie.

Seraphim2042d ago

honestly, I'm somewhat surprised they've lasted this long. While I have Batman I've yet to play it. And even that I bought because it was like $10 @amazon Black Friday '16 but all episodes weren't even available at the time of purchase so I shelved it. Thing is w/o even having played their titles it seems like they definitely did a great job with the IPs they worked on. But you're right, after so long of developing games that all have the same artistic design and play.... while we certainly don't know the financials and whether they could have even come up with something new, were just focused on the status quo or what not it's definitely sad to see them shut down. Hopefully the talented developers find a good home and can work on some great projects. Be a shame to see their talent wasted at the wrong studio.

nirwanda2042d ago

I got batman with psplus it's really good, quite short but definitely worth playing.

Sirk7x2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

I feel like they might have had contracts for multiple Walking Dead games as well, but interest in that property in general has completely tanked. The show was incredibly popular when they started making them. It's a shame, the first Walking Dead game and Wolf Among Us were some very great gaming experiences for me.

AspiringProGenji2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

After The wolf among us the point-and-click story game novelty seemed to worn off. I heard Borderlands and Batman were good tho. Sad indeed. They got really good writers

Batman was awesome. Shame, I would have wished for a sequel to Enemy Within.

The_Sage2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

Batman was awesome. Best Batman story every. As good as the tv show Gotham, quality of story wise.

ZaWarudo2042d ago

Tales from the Borderlands was their best game imo. It sadly did not sell well.

MadLad2042d ago

The humorous writing in that one was fantastic.

Jinger2042d ago

Batman was one of their worse ones tbh terrible performance and bad recreation of the characters. Almost as bad as Gotham.

MadLad2042d ago

Twau and Borderlands were my favorites from them. Waa excited hearing they had more Wolf on the way, and now I'm sad knowing I won't get a continuation of either.

Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors: "I deserve a lot of criticism."

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.
"I'm sure I deserve a lot of criticism, but I don't think my team or companies deserve all the criticism. I could take a lot of that blame myself. But ultimately I need to believe in the mission," he said.

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN10h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos8h ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

GamerRN1h ago

They can form a company if they want, they are just as jobless as if "Microsoft had left them as 3rd party".

"MIcrosoft leaves Bethesda do what they know how to do best" ... close! Oh the irony ....
(Citation from a week old article)

PassNextquestion12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger10h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Profchaos12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto12h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos11h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long9h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel11h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator10h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

H91d 6h ago

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.
