Microsoft, It's Time To Remove The Paywall For Free-to-Play Games

WTMG's Jordan Hawes: "With Sony finally enabling cross-play, it's time for Microsoft to change some of their own policies, namely, requiring a paywall for free-to-play games."

Been saying this ever since they took shots at Sony for not allowing crossplay non stop yet they have the nerve to lock F2P games behind a paywall.

Switch4One1985d ago

To be fair, you've been saying a whole lot ever since forever so you'll forgive us if our knee jerk reaction is letting out an eye roll.

That being said, I actually agree with you for a change. Microsoft need to let us play f2p games for free!

DarkVoyager1985d ago

My question why Xbox fans attacked Sony left and right about crossplay but never seem to bring up Microsoft locking F2P games behind Xbox Live?

Switch4One1985d ago

You'll have to ask them. Even though I have XBL, I have spoken against this unfriendly policy of theirs.

doggo841984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

"To be fair, you've been saying a whole lot ever since"

Boy is that ironic coming from you.

monkey6021984d ago

It might have to do with Cross Play effecting more numbers of people. Players from both sides would see a benefit in Cross platform online play with larger communities etc,

Free to play doesn't bother most who already pay or PlayStation players don't care if Microsoft havebto pay for Free to Play games. It doesn't concern them.

I think they should be free and I get your point though, it is ironic with a few particular people

Ahhh ... the internet... where manners are a myth

Sophisticated_Chap1984d ago

I'm a paying customer with a job, so this is not top of mind for most people like myself. Though, I suppose that for families with no money, this would be a good thing. However, if hypothetically all games start going free to play, there wouldn't be much money in providing the service that Xbox Live provides. Like all businesses, they are out to make a profit. They are not there as a social program for the people.

DarkVoyager1984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

@Sophisticated_Chap

“I'm a paying customer with a job, so this is not top of mind for most people like myself.“

That doesn’t mean anything. It’s the point of it and you know that. If a game is “Free 2 Play” it should be exactly that and not behind a paywall such as Xbox Live.

fr0sty1984d ago

Donald Trump plays Xbox.

rainslacker1983d ago (Edited 1983d ago )

Knee jerk or not, doesn't make sense that this issue went ignored while people kept casting blame on Sony for not allowing cross play. Sony not allowing cross play didn't really affect Xbox users that much, but the F2P paywall could. The two things seem completely separated from one another.

Is it not possible for people to fight more than one good fight at a time? If that's the case, maybe all those Xbox fans should stop worrying about Sony's house, and concentrate on their own.

There is really no excuse for them to be so dismissive over this issue, if they're going to to make such a fuss on behalf of another console user base.

Given your reasoning for not paying attention to the OP, maybe you can now understand why all these PS fans didn't take all these arguments about Sony evil to heart....because most of this cross play stuff came across as exactly the same.

Even now that cross play seems settled, I don't see a lot of outcry on this issue. Now its the PS classic, and a couple days ago, Sony being arrogant for deciding to not attend E3.

Why o why1983d ago

This will not gain anywhere near as much traction and attention from gamer friendly warriors as the x play did and it doesn't take a degree in psychology to know why.

I guess people pick their 'concerned' fuelled battles with laser precision. Their efforts will be disproportionate and there won't be so much campaigning. . .bet you any money

YEP... Xbox came out trying to act buddy buddy but when they had the market and they were winning by alot they were cocky asf... I am glad xbox got smashed this gen and it will happen next gen to

Switch4One1984d ago

How does something that was a problem 10 years ago factor in this conversation?

Dragonscale1984d ago

@switch, because it shows how hypocritical xbox and their fanboys are.

1984d ago
XtaZ1984d ago

Actually, maybe you should do some fucking research, because Sony literally NEVER asked or invited MS to do cross-play in any shape or form. It's just one of many lies you Sony fanboys keep regurgitate to make yourselves feel better.

ForeverTheGoat1984d ago

No you need to do research. Sony never asked MS for crossplay. They were open to pc but never said anything about MS

rainslacker1983d ago

Sony may have never asked. But they have said they were open to it....publicly. They were also open to it on a few games like Portal, FFXI, and FFXIV. If they were open to it with those games, there is no reason to believe they'd be against it for other games if publishers wanted it. It's made known that the publishers involved asked MS, and Sony, and Sony said OK, while MS said no.

"My question why Xbox fans attacked Sony left and right about crossplay"

The biggest issue for Many was and still is their refusal to support cross platform purchases in games.

But on topic I agree ms should allow FTP games without gold.

rainslacker1983d ago

You mean that one thing that came up about a month or so before they finally started testing the waters with cross play?

Yeah, I can see why that last month of cross progression, which wrongly got appropriated to be about cross play, as somehow the reason why Sony received endless criticism for the two years prior.

81BX1984d ago

All I got from your comment.... You said something bad about Sony so I said something bad about you.

Ricegum1984d ago

And you've provided zero input to this conversation. So what's your take on Microsoft's paywall 81BX? Judging by your silence on this I'm guessing you think what they're doing is okay?

1984d ago
81BX1984d ago

Well let's think about this... I pay for xbox live and psn... both systems require me to pay them a fee to use my internet to connect to their service. Crying about a paywall to play "free" games isn't the issue. Its paying for psn/live to begin with. If you're going to cry about something... make it count!

jagermaster6191984d ago

Honestly who doesn't have gold or plus subscription? I personally have no issue with this or cross play who cares!!!

Nu1983d ago

Gold and game pass need to be bundle up

Oh my! And it only took *100 days for an article to show up. I've spoken about it all the time.

Wonder if it will get approved?

Switch4One1985d ago

Why wouldn't it? It's a good article highlighting an important gaming issue.

HeyNavi1984d ago

It should get approved and hopefully people take it as seriously as they did with the crossplay issue.

1984d ago
Rude-ro1984d ago

People do...
The issue is the gaming media and who pays them.

Imalwaysright1984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

I'm waiting for the articles that say that NO game we paid for should be behind a paywall especially 3rd party games whose servers are provided and maintained by its devs/publishers.

xX-oldboy-Xx1984d ago

That aint happening - you can thank ms and 360 owners for that.

Imalwaysright1983d ago

I can thank ALL the morons that paid for it on the 360 and PS4.

doggo841984d ago

It got approved, but I expect people to shrug it off like it's nothing.. If it were Sony... Boy, you wouldn't hear the end of it.

sazselesbon1984d ago

Are you implying N4G public is pro MS? That's hilarious!

UCForce1983d ago

@sazselesbon Well, it’s seem like it. MS fanboys will take over N4G and we will see which fanboy is the worst.

Why o why1983d ago

Sazselebon
The term you're looking for is 'vocal minority'

Sometimes it's the smallest dogs who make the most noise. They may not be high in numbers since ms kinda flopped this gen but they can sure make their voices heard when they see anything to use as a beating stick against a competitor or criticism of their brand of choice

rainslacker1983d ago (Edited 1983d ago )

Queue the 5-6 articles a week?

Somehow I doubt it. Although I'm somewhat thankful for that. MS fan boys won't care enough. They have the next E3 to look forward to.

@Iam

That seems like a more logical fight to partake in, and one that I think all gamers, regardless of console affiliation should take to heart. But, it's not going to happen, and even if they started, it'd be made into a console war thing about who started it first, who upped the price first, how much better one is over the other, so its worth it, so on and so forth.

The console war often gets in the way of productive discourse over what is good for the consumers.

So you bought a Xbox to play F2P games that you can play free on your tablet or PC? Hahaha.... MS does need to change but not in a rush. As most gamers pay to play other games online.

Dark_Knightmare21984d ago

That’s besides the point don’t justify this crappy practice because it’s your favorite piece of plastic. It’s absolutely ridiculous they lock f2p games behind a paywall especially when their direct competitor does not.

1984d ago
xX-oldboy-Xx1984d ago

ZXCPCA500 - you've relegated yourself a level of near redundancy with that comment. A game ceases to be what it is intended to be when played on an xbox. How is that something to defended?

Why o why1983d ago

Did any Xbox gamer buy an Xbox to play ps gamers. . . . You guys are all over the place. Free to play should be free to play.

LemyAtom1984d ago

But the whole point is that the games are FREE to play. Nintendo and Sony both allow it so Microsoft should too.

HighPlayer281984d ago

You sound crazy as an Xbox fan Microsoft can not afford any type of negative public perception towards Xbox if they want to improve their ecosystem. They have to remove that paywall or it will give Sony another shot to use against them. I love Xbox but this issue has to be addressed quickly.

ILostMyMind1984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

Sony is not shooting anyone.

Dragonscale1984d ago

Strawman deflection argument lol. The fact you're defending them speaks volumes.

MrBeatdown1984d ago

I know. It's hard to believe anyone would buy a game console with a game controller to play games instead of using a tablet.

jelloaceomega1984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

So much arrogance in this comment. You sound like that game designer for Diablo: Immortals.

MS: most anti consumer move ever remove dat paywall

PhoenixUp1984d ago

I’m surprised people didn’t make as big a deal of this throughout the entire generation

mcstorm1984d ago

I get what your saying but how many people buy an xbox just for f2p games and also not MP games?

I think they should be free to play online but I knew when I was getting an xbox I was going to be using it for online play and that I needed xbox live to play it.

Paying for online is part of the reason I only own a xbox and not a PlayStation.

Last gen would of been no bother to me paying for live psn and NN but having a little one and less time I picked the console which has the most games I wanted to play this gen as I have to be selective due to lack of time.

I do thibk microsoft will look into this though as game pass can be used without xbox live.

This is one good things about having 3 company in the industry though as each has + and - points to look up to and address.

My only issue this gen is missing out on some big games due to lack of playing time I now have.

PhoenixUp1984d ago

A lot of people don’t subscribe to XBLG. Shouldn’t mean they should be deprived of enjoying F2P games. That’s just a stupid obstacle to have in place and even more absurd for anybody to defend it

Teflon021984d ago

Yup, I know people who don't pay for Plus or live and they'll play the playstation because during that time they can still play warframe, fortnite etc. It's actually a horrible practice. They should have removed it when they removed the ridiculous paywall behind apps and the browser. Don't know how they get away wit some of the ridiculous crap they do

Rude-ro1984d ago

Why do you mix up “people” with media.
They do all the noise... and get paid well for it.

Rachel_Alucard1983d ago (Edited 1983d ago )

They've done this for years but it's like what MS used to do where they would lock Netflix and basic apps behind the same paywall. They changed that early on but only because of the competition outdoing them. Right now Free 2 play games and party chat are locked behind a paywall still yet their competitors don't do this. Not only that but any games that have an external subscription you need not only pay for that sub but also gold as well. Sony doesn't do this. Nobody brings that info up either. Thankfully only game I've seen like this is ESO, but imagine FFXIV was to get a port on Xbone then you'd see it happen again.
