Don't forget Messi is playing the deeper role these days as well, as the stats do reflect this. Ronaldo on the other hand, seems more concerned with scoring goals than making them, which you can see in the stats also.

your reasoning for the stats make plenty sense but all this time, ronaldo has been playing as a winger scoring as many goals as the best sriker in the world. i suppose that should say something about him in the last 4 years or so.

as for assists, its not like ronaldo isnt trying to assist and plays selfish. did you see the chance he created for modric? now as yourself, if that was neymar, would he have missed it too? soccer stats all depend on other players performances as well. goals scored by one player = number of chances created by a team. assists = number of chances other players are able to convert based on their ability.
