Auxerre striker Roy Contout won both penalties but it was Benoit Pedretti and Dariusz Dudka who converted the spot-kicks to send AJA into the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue at Saint-Etienne's expense.
The home side started the match well but it was Saint-Etienne who were in the ascendancy for the opening period, putting pressure on the Auxerre goal with a slow methodical build up.
It didn't take long however for the hosts to take the initiative with Contout their main threat. His probing runs at les Verts' centre-backs proved to be very fruitful as they struggled to cope with his pace.
This pressure then led to the opening goal as Contout made his way down the left and his cross struck Sylvain Marchal's arm from very close range, but the referee decided to award the spot kick, which Pedretti coolly slotted home to give his side the advantage.
Contout seems to be an effective player. Auxerre are looking good this year
