That price tag is almost literally double what he is actually worth.

I agree.
I just saw this equation on a blog - According to the prices when they were purchased:
Gareth Bale (£10m) + Wesley Sneijder (£12m) + Kevin Nolan (£4m) + Marouane Chamakh (free transfer) + Rafael Van der Vaart (£8m) = £34m VS Andy Carroll = £35m

someone brought it up on ESPNSoccernet's live blog as well. See video below for my reaction at the time:

To be fair, it was during the January transfer window and transfers are always inflated at this time. Besides, it was a last-minute bid because no one was expecting Torres to leave.

this was posted on ESPNSoccernet's live blog earlier by one of the admins:

Chris Murphy:
This is by no means confirmed but Andy Carroll supposedly text Newcastle fan and fanzine editor Steve Wraith to say, "I'm gutted to be leaving my home town club, i was told to go. I didn't want to leave that's why I signed a 5 year deal. I was pushed out of the door."

Hogwash. A player can choose to leave or stay. If he didn't want Liverpool he could have just stayed at Newcastle. Don't players get a say in transfers?

Suarez and Caroll would make a really good pair in the front.
