Euro 2012: Why Spain Is Not the Best National Side of All Time

BR - For starters, let's congratulate Spain on their victory in Euro 2012. There can be no denying that they earned the title with their play over the past month.

For that matter, let me reiterate my stance on their Euro 2008 title and their 2010 World Cup victory, which is that they were deserving champions in both.

Now, let's talk about this side's place in the history of international football.

1 of the Best.... Yes

The Absolute Best.... Debatable

They aren't even debatable, 1970 and 1982 Brazil and Beckenauer's Germany are.

What the author fails to mention about comparing Pele's Brazil to this Spain is that football has changed greatly since then. He's throwing these stats about how Spain never "dominated" a game in the tournaments they won, and how Brazil beat some teams 5-2, or outscored them by a lot. Defense has evolved in the modern game, this is why the Brazil of today, I assure you, will struggle to reach semis(if they do) in the 2014 world cup.

Neymar is still not in europe, when he faces defenders that HAVE played in Europe, he gets thrown around like a ragdoll, and Brazil's offense loses force.

Doesn't matter how Spain won their tournaments, and how other teams had flaws, they simply showed they were the best team in football right now, whether they are the best ever is up to opinion.

You have got to be kidding me, if anything defenses have gotten much worse since the 80s and 90s. I'd like to see Spain try anything against the Italy from 1994 who had an insane defense. Sure defending may have gotten better from some of the shittier teams and the average maybe up but the best defenders now aren't as good as the defenders of the past.

Italy has always been known for their strong defense. The game in the past was much more open, games now are more closed because they are more tactical, again, comparing Pele's Brazil to the Spain of now is just stupid.
