Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is seeking a final big contract that would push his earnings close to the £200,000-a-week mark, ESPN can reveal.
Cole, 31, wants to stay at Stamford Bridge, but there are now genuine fears that the club will allow his contract to run down as they did with Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack because of the player's salary demands.
With his current deal ending in 2013, talks have taken place over an extension, but there have been no developments and it is in Chelsea's court to come up with an offer to persuade him to stay.
