The Uncomfortable Alliance: Argentina's Indifferent Relationship with Leo Messi

In 2012, U.S. sportswriter Wright Thompson travelled to Rosario, Lionel Messi’s hometown, to learn more about the city’s most famous son since Che Guevara. The best footballer in the world is an intriguing enigma: painfully shy and seemingly taciturn in interviews, he only comes to life in public on the football pitch, where he sparkles like no player in history has before and perhaps like no player will again.

Nice article, but them Argentinians sound a bit petty. If winning the WC is what it took to get my country's football heroes on the wall, then the wall would forever be blank!

Yeah its something that is rarely talked about- how Messi is viewed in his home country. Perhaps one day when he nears retirement he can do a stint at NOB or Boca Juniors. But yes many of the people that were interviewed do sound bitter- so he never played for a local club, who cares? Had he done so he still would have been identified before the ago of 20 and would have gone to Europe asap. His contribution to his local club would have been minimal.

He went to Barca early because they said they would foot all his medical bills. Hardly a tough choice. I don't see what the issue is. It's not like he ever wanted to play for Spain. Can you imagine the Spanish dominance if that had of materialised. Bad enough as it is without him lol!

Or imagined if he went forward with his Italian lineage and played for Italy? Personally I've always viewed him as a stoic character of sorts someone who shuns the spotlight. he is the exact opposite of Maradona - when he reaches his 50's I dont think we will ever see him in the stands overweight with a cigar in his mouth. If anything he will live the rest of his life out in peace.

Its maradona's fault argentina had a crap team last world cup despite all the talent, yet he got none of the blame. It went mostly to Messi instead. Argentians should stop cherishing the past and focus on the future or at least do both.
