Hamburg defender Dennis Aogo and Bayern Munich youngster Holger Badstuber were the surprise names in Germany's provisional 27-man World Cup squad.
Coach Joachim Low also named Bayern veteran Hans-Jorg Butt among three goalkeepers after first-choice Rene Adler was ruled out with a rib injury.
Former Stuttgart captain Thomas Hitzlsperger was not included.
The squad, which will contest a warm-up match against Malta on 13 May, will have to be cut to 23 players by 1 June.
