Rafael van der Vaart appeared to be on his way out of Real Madrid last summer when he was deemed surplus to requirements, but the Dutch international decided to stay at the Blancos and fought his way back in the team.
The former Hamburg star has now made it clear that he was close to leaving Madrid though, as compatriot Robin van Persie was doing his utmost to lure Van der Vaart to Premier League giants Arsenal.
