The England striker has been struggling for form and goals since March, when he injured his ankle against Bayern Munich. Following his poor World Cup, Rooney has scored just one goal for United this season and was withdrawn from their last Premier League outing to Sunderland with Ferguson citing an ankle injury.
Despite Ferguson's initial diagnosis that Rooney could be ruled out for three weeks, the 24 year-old returned for England duty and played 90 minutes as Fabio Capello's side were held to a goalless draw in their euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley.
