When I watched Barcelona dismantle Real Madrid last week it crossed my mind that it may have been one of the finest displays of football I have ever seen. I am just about old enough to remember the fantastic Brazil World Cup winning team of 1970 and never felt that I was likely to see anything to match their brilliance. Now, I think I might have done.
Tactical
I know Barcelona didn’t win last season’s Champions League but that was largely down to the tactical genius of the ‘special one’ rather than Inter actually being on the same planet in terms of footballing expertise. I know that up until last week Real Madrid were ahead of them in La Liga, but that game at the Camp Nou surely clarified which one is the superior side.
What about AC Milan in the eraly 90s, with players like Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, van Basten, Frank Rijkaard og Ruud Gullit...
In 1991 and 1992 they played 58 games in a row without losing.
Milan won the Serie A 1992,1993 and 1994, played in the Champions League final from 1993 to 1995. In 1993 they were beaten by Olympique Marseille in a controversial finale. In 1994 Milan won 4-0 against Barcelona in what is perhaps the club's and CL`s best game of all time!
Its impossible to compare the teams quality in diferent decades- because football changes and is getting better and better. But you can compare how solid a team is compared to other teams at the time... And, No team has been that solid and beyond all as AC Milan was in the early 90ies. They were unbeated for almost two years. Only team that could beat them, was in training against the reserves.
As well as diffrent decades also diffrent styles of play no body plays like Barca Ac Milan of the 90's would have to play Barca today to find out who's better but it is impossible diffrent ERA's of football
