Cristiano Ronaldo set a new Primera Division scoring record of 40 goals in a season on the day Deportivo La Coruna dropped out of La Liga.
Ronaldo needed less than five minutes of his side's 8-1 win over relegated Almeria to get his 39th league goal of the campaign, claiming the record outright he had previously held jointly with Real Madrid's Hugo Sanchez (1989/90 season) and the legendary Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra (1959/60).
