Alberto Aquilani's deflected late effort gave Italy a 2-1 win over Spain as the 2006 World Cup winners edged out the 2010 champions in an entertaining clash in Bari on Wednesday night.
Riccardo Montolivo gave Italy the lead after 11 minutes with an exquisite chip, before Xabi Alonso levelled with a penalty late in the first half after the home side had missed a number of good chances.
