Cahill signs for Chelsea FC

Gary Cahill today (Monday) completed his transfer to Chelsea.

He becomes the fifth current England international in the squad and having passed a medical examination on Saturday morning, watched his new team-mates beat Sunderland in the afternoon.

On moving to Stamford Bridge from Bolton Wanderers, the 26-year-old central defender said:
'Chelsea is a massive club, it is a club that looks to win trophies season in season out and it is a big opportunity for me to be a part of that. Opportunities like this you can't turn down.'

He is eligible to play for Chelsea in the FA Cup this season having not featured in Bolton's third round tie. He will wear the no. 24 shirt.

Would be interesting to see how he performs at Chelsea. Might end up like David Luiz, bright start but went downhill.

Just like Carroll? Or any other players in the premier league..

It will take Cahill time to settle down. He did well in his previous two clubs so imo I don't think he'll struggle.

I don't think he is good enough for a club like Chelsea. He is a good English player but not a great world class player for a top european club- it has taken him forever to break into the England setup because he is not what i would call a naturally gifted player like Terry, Ferdinand or Ledley King. He is also been behind Lescott, Dawson and Jagielka in the pecking order. For good reason......

Personally i would be picking Smalling and Jones ahead of him too, because they look like the future for England bypassing Cahill. Smalling looks classy and another few years will probably be the best defender in England IMO. Jones needs more time, but he is only 19 and already looks the real deal.

I think he has been signed more for his availability and nationality rather than his outright defensive skills. Another Chelsea January patch up job. If you look at how badly he had been exploited at Bolton so far this year he has been at fault for countless goals. Is it really a great idea to sign the lynchpin defender from the club that has conceded more goals than anybody else??

He is better than what Chelsea have right now at centreback which i suppose is the aim when you bring new players in, however for a club like Chelsea and their ambitions to compete at the highest level, his weaknesses will be exploited mercilessly. Soon enough we will see that.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them in the fight for someone like Mats Hummels in the summer.

Better than David Luiz but that isn't saying much. I think he'll be a solid dependable squad player at Chelsea.
