Michael Owen Rumors: Liverpool Must Sign Veteran for Attacking Help

After failing to score against Arsenal, and losing their second of three Premier League matches this season, Liverpool must sign veteran striker Michael Owen to give the squad more attacking quality.

Liverpool are weighing up a move for free agent Michael Owen after failing to add a striker to their ranks on transfer deadline day.

The out-of-favour Andy Carroll was loaned out to West Ham United on Friday and it appeared Liverpool would replace the forward to offer back-up to Luis Suarez.

While Owen is certainly not the top player he once was, he's still capable of helping Brendan Rodgers' squad create more scoring opportunities.

Sunday's 2-0 loss to Arsenal at Anfield further proved how few scoring options Rodgers currently has at his disposal.

Two goals in six matches isn't good enough for Liverpool, especially with the additions of Nuri Sahin and Joe Allen.

When Liverpool is playing inferior teams, the squad will need to score as many goals as possible to improve its goal difference, which at -5 is tied for the second worst in the league. The Reds are also 17th in the league table after three matches.

With league matches against Sunderland and Manchester United coming up, Liverpool's challenge of earning six points will be a difficult one.

There's no one else on Liverpool with the experience that Owen has, and there really isn't much risk in taking a chance on the veteran. If it doesn't work out, then so be it, but Liverpool has to do something to improve the squad.

Young players such as Raheem Sterling have shown promise thus far but cannot be relied on to score goals against the better clubs.

Owen wouldn't step in and dominate for Liverpool, but he would be another goal scorer to add to Rodgers' bench, which has little attacking quality at the moment.
