Liverpool are reportedly interested in making a move for Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes over the winter transfer window in order to replace Pepe Reina.

The Sunday People (h/t Daily Mirror) first ran with the story about a possible move from Brendan Rodgers for the 31-year-old. Valdes is down to the last 12 months on his contract at Barcelona and discussions of a new deal are believed to have stalled, which could open up the door for a potential transfer sometime in the near future.

Having watched Reina play this season, picking up a stronger and more stable goalkeeper in Valdes wouldn't be such a bad move for the Reds to make.

However, the news took an interesting turn recently when Valdes was quizzed about his future at the Calatan club in light of the current rumors.

The goalkeeper then tweeted out the following:

Hola a todos, quieroaclararquetodavia no me he pronunciadoacercade mi futuro, en sumomento lo haré. Todo lo... fb.me/1enJ1fjZS

The translation of which equates to something along the lines of:

Hello all. I want to clarify that I have not declared anything about my future yet—I will do that in time. Everything that has been said on this matter, is speculation.

That both helps and doesn't help shed light on the whole situation.

Valdes would seem unlikely to want to leave Barcelona given his long and illustrious history with the club, but there is the matter about his contract.

If the Catalan club cannot come up with an extension or a new deal for him in the next six months, the 31-year-old will be available for a free transfer over the summer transfer window—something that Barca will desperately want to avoid.

Thus, if they feel they cannot get an extension for Valdes soon, they may opt to sell him this winter and therefore still pick up a transfer fee in return.

Barcelona will reportedly listen to any offers of around £16 million.

Reina hasn't been particularly brilliant for the Merseyside club this year and is simply not as good as Valdes is in goals. Having said that, the goalkeeper does seem to still have a future at Anfield and with Brad Jones waiting in the wings, Liverpool do not need a new, veteran goalkeeper to add into their ranks at the club anytime in the near future.

That would seemingly put to end any rumor of a move for Valdes, or any other goalkeeper over the transfer window for that matter.

However, the Barcelona legend's comments seem a little vague and a little speculative—suggesting that there might be something more to all of this than quite meets the eye. Perhaps there is a deal brewing, or perhaps this is nothing but transfer drivel.

We don't quite know the answer to this one just yet.
