Begovic, Valdes, Vorm... which goalkeeper can Ferguson turn to if No 1 De Gea goes?

Manchester United are evaluating their goalkeeping situation once again.

David de Gea is understood to be yearning for a return to Spain and United want a keeper that can restore confidence to their defence, impose himself on the opposition and help them dominate for years to come.

Here Sportsmail considers United's options...

ASMIR BEGOVIC

Club: Stoke City
Age
: 25
Height: 6ft 5in

PEPE REINA

Club: Liverpool
Age
: 30
Height:
6ft 3in

Asmir Begovic
Pepe Reina

Has kept 11 clean sheets this season for club and country and has started to show what all the fuss was about when he left Portsmouth for Stoke. His displays have made him United's primary choice for a move in the summer. The only concern is his lack of big game experience but his physical presence and is a major plus.

United wanted Reina prior to signing David de Gea but Liverpool would not countenance the sale. Now their stance has changed. His form has dropped over recent seasons and that is United's concern. He has the experience they want but they are unsure whether his form would return with a new challenge.

IKER CASILLAS

Club: Real Madrid
Age: 31
Height: 6ft 1in

FERNANDO MUSLERA

Club: Galatasaray
Age
: 26

Height
: 6ft 2in

Fernando Muslera

Few keepers can boast greater experience of the big occasion than Casillas. He has long been admired by Sir Alex Ferguson but there are concerns whether he could handle the physical side of the Premier League. He would love to stay at Madrid if he can iron out differences with Jose Mourinho - or the Special One leaves first.

The Uruguay keeper impressed during the recent Champions League games between Galatasaray and United, keeping a clean sheet in the game in Turkey. He has more than 40 caps for Uruguay and United have made tentative enquiries as to his cost and availability. Galatasaray want around £14million.

SIMON MIGNOLET

Club: Sunderland
Age
: 24

Height
: 6ft 3in

TIM KRUL

Club: Newcastle
Age
: 24

Height: 6ft 4in

Simon Mignolet
Tim Krul

Has been outstanding behind an erratic defence and the feedback has been good from Sunderland's former Old Trafford contingent. The Belgian was recognised as the North East football writers' player of the year. He is brave, speaks five languages and no-one has saved more shots from inside the box this season.

One of the best transfer deals Newcastle have ever done, the £200,000 signing from ADO Den Haag is rated at £15million. AC Milan are keen to sign him now but are struggling financially. Newcastle do not want to sell but their dip this season will make them vulnerable to offers. Not top of United's list at the moment.

MICHEL VORM

Club: Swansea City
Age
: 29

Height: 6ft

MARC-ANDRE TER STEGEN

Club: Borussia Monchengladbach
Age
: 20

Height 6ft 2in

Michel Vorm
Marc Andre ter Stegen

Excellent goalkeeper who has impressed since his unheralded arrival from Utrecht in Holland. An agile shot-stopper he has handled the Premier League well and is equally adept with the ball at his feet. Is an option for United but others are ahead of him in their pecking order.

Young Germany keeper has risen to prominence after a series of brilliant displays in his debut season helped Borussia Moenchengladbach avoid relegation. Was outstanding recently against Bayern Munich and Liverpool and Barcelona are watching him.

VICTOR VALDES

Club: Barcelona
Age
: 31

Height
: 6ft 1in

RON-ROBERT ZIELER

Club: Hannover
Age: 21
Height: 6ft 1in

Victor Valdes
Ron-Robert Zieler

Great character within the Barcelona dressing room who will be sorely missed at the Camp Nou. Not the biggest and, as a result, not the best on collecting crosses which would deter most English sides. Excellent with his feet, as you'd expect, he has expressed a preference to join Chelsea in the past.

Zieler joined United from Cologne in 2005 and challenged Ben Amos and Tom Heaton for a place in United's youth and reserve teams. However, he lost ground after a broken arm and returned to Germany where he has revived his career and is realising his early potential. Is another monitored by Liverpool also.

DAVID GIL MOHEDANO

Club: Atletico Madrid
Age
: 19

Height: 6ft 2

JULIO CESAR

Club: QPR
Age
: 33
Height
: 6ft 1in

David Gil Mohedano
Julio Cesar

United don't just want to strengthen their first team and have scouted Atletico's rising star. They also have Sam Johnstone, 19, and Ben Amos, 22, on their books while Pierluigi Gollini, 17, who was signed from Fiorentina is tipped for a bright future.

Former Inter Milan stopper Julio Cesar's resurgence at QPR has been one of just a few chinks of light in the club's relegation-threatened season. And the Brazilian has been rewarded with international recognition for the first time in more than a year.
