Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay says he is happy at Benfica and not thinking about a move away from the club, according to talkSPORT.

The talented Argentine was said to be one of David Moyes’ top targets during the summer as he scoured the continent for new defensive additions, though a reported ‘gentleman’s agreement’ never amounted to a deal taking place between the Premier League champions and the Portuguese outfit.

With United a little short of backup to the ageing Rio Ferdinand and the injury-prone Nemanja Vidic, Garay seemed to have been identified as a good addition to the squad at Old Trafford, though he has remained with Benfica and continued to impress with two goals against Pacos de Ferreira at the weekend.

Speaking after the game, the 27-year-old spoke of his joy at playing for the club, despite interest from United.

“The most important thing was to get the three points,” he said.

“We are improving game by game and it’s always nice to score. On a personal level, I feel good and I am very happy at Benfica, in terms of the club and with the players here.”

Garay has been at Benfica since 2011 after his last venture to a true giant of European football ended somewhat disappointingly as he failed to establish himself in a two-year spell with Real Madrid.

Despite United’s need for a new centre-back this summer, their only major purchase was of Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who joined from Everton on transfer deadline day.
