Report: FC Barcelona Agree Deal To Sign Mats Hummels

Reports from Diario AS suggest that FC Barcelona's search for a centre-half is over, as the Blaugrana reportedly agree a deal to bring German international Mats Hummels to the Camp Nou from Borussia Dortmund

Could it be? Is the wait finally over? If reports from Madrid-based newspaper Diario AS are anything to go by, Culés may soon be celebrating as it has been rumoured that FC Barcelona’s search for a central defender has come to an end. The result? Remember, this is just speculation, but reports suggest that Barcelona have reached an agreement to bring German international Mats Hummels to the Camp Nou.

Earlier in the season, we reported on this very transfer, bringing you news that Hummels had agreed a switch to Catalunya as early as last October. Today’s reports might just be recycled rumours, or perhaps they are further proof that a move is indeed in place? Hummels is seen by many as an ideal fit for Barcelona’s defensive conundrum, and on paper, a potential partnership with Gerard Pique sounds formidable to say the least.

Naturally, there are probably better alternatives out there. The idea of Thiago Silva in a Blaugrana jersey is certainly appealing, but barring a drastic change of heart from either the player or his club, Silva will remain in Paris for the foreseeable future – especially in light of Michel Platini’s comments on the severity of any upcoming Financial Fair Play sanctions that may be levied against PSG.

As always, we wait for official confirmation, or indeed any acknowledgement of interest from either club, but these reports are encouraging. Making up for lost time, the Barca management appears to have identified their main targets and are moving swiftly in order to secure them at a fair price before the beginning of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
