Marseille have confirmed that Marcelo Bielsa will be appointed as their manager from the end of the season, with the Argentinian given a two-year contract.
Bielsa, who was in charge of Argentina from 1998-2004, Chile 2007-2011 and Athletic Bilbao from 2011-13, will take over from the Frenchman José Anigo. He has not worked as a manager since his departure from Bilbao but has a reputation as an excellent tactician, with Pep Guardiola calling him the "best manager in the world" in 2012, while the Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino is also known to be a fan.
Marseille won their first French league title in 18 years in 2010 under coach Didier Deschamps, who left in 2012 to take charge of the France team. He was succeeded by Élie Baup, who was then replaced by Anigo on a caretaking basis last December. The club are sixth in Ligue 1, with three games to play.
André Ayew, the club's Ghanaian international, believes the appointment of the 58-year-old is a shrewd move. "I think he [Bielsa] can bring a lot to Marseille, including a new look. I would like to stay but we'll see if Bielsa wants to keep me," he said.
