Felix Magath has left his role as Fulham manager after the Championship club's dismal start to the season.

The German departs with the Cottagers sitting bottom of the Championship and Kit Symons will take charge as caretaker manager.

Magath had been plunged into a Premier League relegation fight when he was appointed in February, but was unable to prevent Fulham from slipping into the second tier.

Chairman Shahid Khan kept faith with the hugely experienced 61-year-old during the summer, although he soon lost patience amidst a miserable run which brought just one draw in seven league games.

Magath's fate was sealed by Wednesday night's 5-3 defeat at leaders Nottingham Forest, leaving him with a record of just four wins in his 20 games in charge.

Symons, a former Fulham defender, will oversee the first-team ahead of this Saturday's home league game against Blackburn.

In a statement on Fulham's official website, Khan said: "This is an unfortunate but necessary change. I am doing what I feel is right and needed for Fulham football club, for today as well as tomorrow.

"I thank our supporters for standing by us during these most difficult of times on the pitch, and promise better days ahead."

Magath's exit continues a period of turmoil at Fulham, who also parted company with Rene Meulensteen and Martin Jol last season.

Symons, Steve Clarke and Chris Hughton are among the names being linked with the vacant role.
