In hindsight, Pies did think it was a little strange that Wayne Rooney opted for an uncharacteristic acrobatic hand-spring goal celebration after scoring his first goal of the evening against Scotland on Tuesday evening.

Turns out the England captain was mimicking the celebration he performed when he last scored against the Auld Enemy, some 14-odd years ago in the 2001 Victory Shield, when a 15-year-old Rooney nodded in at the far post to score his first ever goal in an England shirt on his first ever start…

Nice, though Rooney admitted that his cartwheel celebration was also partly a little present for his five-year-old son Kai too, telling reporters after the game: “That was for my son. He’s been doing them quite a lot so he wanted me to do one.”
