Liverpool’s stuttering contract negotiations with Raheem Sterling’s representatives have reportedly put Chelsea on alert.

Sterling has established himself as a key player for the Reds this season after playing in an unfamiliar striker role following injuries to star man Daniel Sturridge.

Manager Brendan Rodgers claimed last week that a new contract for Sterling was ‘imminent’,  but the youngster has reportedly stalled on inking the fresh terms at Anfield.

The protracted saga has drawn the attention of Chelsea, who are now monitoring the situation alongside Real Madrid, according to the Daily Express, and the Blues may test the water with an eye-watering offer in the summer.

Sterling starred for the Reds when they hosted Chelsea at Anfield in the League Cup semi-final last week, and it was his goal that levelled the tie up at 1-1 ahead of Tuesday’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking last week, Rodgers said of his player’s contract situation: ‘Obviously the club are speaking with his representatives on it. I would think that will be concluded very imminently.

‘You can see he’s very happy, [the delay is] nothing to do with Raheem – he wants to be here. Hopefully we’ll get a solution on that very soon.’

However, the Stamford Bridge side are said to have been encouraged by the delay in negotiations.
