Inter director Piero Ausilio doesn’t regret signing Dani Osvaldo and is committed to Roberto Mancini “long-term.”

Ausilio spoke to Sportitalia after receiving an award from Tuttomercatoweb.

“Everyone knows we had financial goalposts set by UEFA, so our transfer strategy had to work around these obligations.

“We took a gamble on Osvaldo. In his first few months at Inter he proved that he’s a quality player. Something broke between us, but I do not regret that choice,” noted Ausilio.

Osvaldo has now rescinded his season-long loan from Southampton and moved to Boca Juniors.

“In January we had the opportunity to sign players we’d been tracking for a while. We took the chance with Xherdan Shaqiri, who wasn’t happy at Bayern Munich, and Marcelo Brozovic who wanted a more ambitious club.

“At Inter I was fortunate enough to build a team that got to the top of the world. Now we need to be more creative and sign potential top players suited to the needs of the club.”

The Nerazzurri also signed Lukas Podolski on loan from Arsenal with an option to buy, but there are reports they won’t make the move permanent.

“He started badly, but is now training well. He is a World Cup winner and hasn’t just forgotten how to play football. We’ll soon see what we need from him,” added Ausilio.

The transfer strategy also changed when Walter Mazzarri was sacked to make way for Mancini, a Coach who has a completely different tactical shape.

“I will be perfectly honest, we could’ve gone for an ‘easier’ route, but instead we opted for a scenario that might not pay off immediately, though in the long-term will be satisfying.

“It was right to bring in Mancini’s ideas right away, so that the players can grow with him. There have been good performances recently, albeit without the results we deserved.”
